I have to quite consciously pace myself, screw around, play video games, or I will just burn myself to the bone because all of a sudden what might otherwise be distracted downtime can instead be moving some AI project along. and I am picky enough that I'll lock back in to get it right and not relax.

I probably spend too much time relaxing-kinda-but-not-really because if I start Doing Work I will not stop. But also I have so much research to do. Gotta pick up some ML basics, finally read Kleppmann, find out about some search fundamentals (I did not take search engines in college)...

...oh and I should probably be reading like 50 other things. And writing more code. And having the LLM do things for me. Then I just do nothing because the vast list of things I want accomplished has driven me insane.

yeah I definitely can relate. there are personal projects I am just not doing bc last time I worked on them they sucked me in really really bad.

What changed, I think, is that downtime lost its protection. It used to be enforced by friction: nothing useful could happen in it. Now every idle minute looks like unused capacity, so rest must be chosen on purpose, and what must be chosen can be failed at.

right now the project i've been wanting to build has had everything clicking into place, i'm giddy but at the same time find myself needing to get off this wild ride

Reading the original thread and this makes me realise my token limit is probably a very good thing. My autistic person brain is *itching* to create all the game and software ideas I've had over the years. It's another way that LLMs are insidious as well as useful.
