So now there are two main European atproto providers (PDS and client), one is open source and one is closed source. Very concerned that the EU talks about how important OSS is, and then they pick the closed source one :/

It’s always the same, like with the GDPR and cookies. Good intentions, awful execution. I guess it’s a mix between technical ignorance and greed, in this case.

They are on several social media, I don't think they are about to exclude #Eurosky. 🇪🇺 W Social: Stockholm-based AT 🇺🇸 X (formerly Twitter): Muskysphere 🇺🇸 Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Whatsapp: Zuckysphere 🇺🇸 LinkedIn: IBM 🇻🇬 Telegram: Durovgrad 🇪🇺 Mastodon 🇺🇸 YouTube: BrinPage

I really hope they are not creating both a Eurosky and W Social account! They are two servers in the same social network (Bluesky), it would be pretty weird to have it duplicate.

Agreed. Even though I personally actually have both a Eurosky, a WSocial (inactive) and BlueSky account. Formally, it matters less on which non-US, non-Chinese, non-Russian server it resides as long as they adhere to European rules and nobody else's. But an unaudited service is just as bad.

bsky.app/profile/ec.e..., and there is more information in the replies to that post

We have now joined W, a new European social media network. We’re present on 15+ platforms, and are especially happy to join one based in Europe and with the ambition to foster open and safer online conversations. Keep the conversation going - whether from W, Bluesky or other compatible apps.

And the security issues thread starts here

It looks like W Identity, the part of @wsocial.eu that checks your papers before you go in, has a very basic XSS on its admin backend, found hours after launch. This seems almost too predictable... Cyberfriends, any thoughts on how bad? 23.social/@kantorkel/1...

Ah yes, sorry, the upcoming EUDI disaster on my mind, I mean eID (which theoretically is what you expect the government ID verification to use since that’s what is for)

And their website links to that closed source client, which cannot be viewed unless you sign up and send them your passport. At least link to a client that's not gated, even if they want their data hosted by the closed source one.

Outside of Roberta Metsola (president of the EU Parl.), I didn't hear about others leaving for W. And W announced before that : Kai Zenner (Head of Office for MEP Axel Voss) and Tommaso Cresto Din (Communication Strategist at Parl.)... both have a Bluesky & Wsocial account 🙃

One is non-profit, the other for-profit, too. EU picked for-profit over non-profit social good, that was recommended to them by the JRC report I just shared.

I think I probably meant "not for profit" not "non-profit" there, which is a pretty easy mistake to make, but yes, Eurosky is part of Stichting Modal (Modal Foundation). I always get these mixed up especially when tired

Yep, I'd agree with "not for profit". I wish they'd consider signing up for a public benefit status, which would let them be tax exempt and signal a stronger commitment to the goal, or even comment on the topic instead of avoiding the question whenever I brought it up.

A few days ago I sent a FOIA request asking for minutes of the meetings where they discussed this migration, I'm curious to see what comes out of that if anything.
