I do have a theory on why, but it hinges on whether or not the devs are close to the ALttP rando devs. Mearl is short for Moon Pearl.

It's because "mearls" is the most common fuckup by speedrunners when we try to put the password in. The floating animation of the box has a minor frustration where jumping once can activate it twice, and we're most likely to experience this on the first box without noticing
