I've reached a point where I think I'm going to follow @totallydonna.kitrocha.com's new rule and if I see someone discussing/admitting to using GenAI I am just going to block them. We need to get this train back on the tracks b/c there are so many useful things technology can be doing but NOT THIS.

What I don't get is, don't people writing with AI realise that everyone else also has access to AI, if we want AI's opinion we can literally just ask it, and even have a back and forth. Reading someone's writing or enjoying someone's art means connecting with that person, why give that up?

First, stop calling them AI. They're not intelligent. Intelligence requires understanding. They don't understand anything. Second, LLMs don't have opinions. See first point. Third, you can't have a "back and forth". You extend a prompt and it gives you more text. Stop personifying these things.

Woah, steady on there. I think you may have, just slightly, completely missed my point. But, LLMs are AI, they have the ability to process info, combine it with pre-existing frameworks and generate novel answers. They don't have sentience, obviously, or unhinged emotional reactions... thankfully.

My interpretation of your initial post was, roughly: "Why bother publishing if you're going to use a ghostwriter? Don't you know other people could just hire them to write more of the same?" and "LLMs are capable of forming opinions and engaging in discourse." Is this incorrect?

And hey, I was intrigued by it in the early days. But once I understood the full extend of IP abuse involved, that was the end of it. Professional courtesy, man. I don't even care if I DID have a use for it--I won't do that to other artists.

It's crazy to me as a tech worker that AI is evangelized so heavily, but the use cases boil down to cutting corners. Outside of accessibility and research, I see it saving time but at the cost of quality. You have to either spend time fixing the quality issues OR accept mediocracy. I feel like I'm

really shooting myself in the foot professionally by not leaning in, but ethics aside I genuinely feel like it doesn't offer that much value. I feel like everyone is pretending it's the greatest thing ever to give the appearance of being forward thinking... But we're all just fooling ourselves?

Just today “Gemini” assembled a pile of word garbage and plastered it over more than half of the page that should have been showing me search results from the actual internet instead of its internally-constructed fever dreams. I tried to disable it, but I’d already disabled everything I could.

Even the “how do I remove Gemini results from searches” answers are polluted with AI-generated gobbledygook that has no relationship to actual things one can accomplish.

This is mostly where I am in all areas with the exception of some of the accessibility stuff and that is mostly because as shit as AI is at most of the accessibility stuff it is also for a lot of people the only access they have to things like image descriptions.
