Sold my Cybertruck and somehow it's news For anyone curious why: I ordered a Rivian R1T (launch edition) and Cybertruck (Foundation Series) around the same time. I knew from the beginning I wouldn't keep both. Put 5,000 miles on each, and now I'm keeping the one I like more 🧵

The Cybertruck * Comfier, smoother suspension and ride quality * Better autopilot/self driving * WAY better speakers * More spacious second row and larger bed, fits more gear * Great rear axle steering/maneuverability

The Rivian * Better interior materials/build quality * Better design (IMO) * Smaller, easier to park in more places (like NYC) * More offroad capable (Both A/T tires) * The little things (gear tunnel, visibility) * Less phantom drain * Recently got access to Tesla supercharging * Less attention

There is also every reason to believe that over time, the CT will brick itself or some bits of it will fall off or the teeny-tiny control arms will snap. There is 0% chance that it will last as long as the Rivian. And the service centres are on multi-weeks delays at this point. Hopelessly bad.

I feel like the last bullet there is actually a biggie. Most people would get tired of the attention but don't have the added step of people wanting selfies afterwards - which is fine at an event but less cool when you are doing everyday things.

I’ll always have an EV after owning one, but I’ll never own a Tesla again. Constant issues. Currently the passenger window is stuck half way down and none of the sensors work. They want to charge $800 just to do diagnostics on the problem. Doesn’t include fixes. Have had loads of other issues.

It seems irresponsible to cover this without engaging with the man at the helm of Tesla, the power he has and the message he’s using that power to spread. I get that you probably want to remain “neutral” so as not to limit your audience, but at some point, doesn’t that make you complicit?

Totally fair. As a product person, I've never ALSO covered the CEO's actions when reviewing products - maybe there's room for that to change though

Thanks for your reply, it means a lot. I’ve been a fan of yours since way back. I do think we’ve entered a new era where the tech industry has SO much impact on our lives that their products can’t just be reviewed in a vacuum. I wish it wasn’t true; it was much more fun when I didn’t think that way.

By covering the CT like it’s just another product, and Tesla like it was just another company, you’re doing Elon a huge service. Helping normalize his racist, xenophobic, fascist rhetoric, and the literal nazis he associates with. You have a massive platform. Is this what you want to do with it?

Man, I've felt the same way. I like his content and it's really high quality, but his "apolitical" approach is starting to rub me the wrong way. He made a video on racism and that was a really good video. I don't think he'd lose that much revenue by speaking out more. I hope.

I think complicit is a strong word, and Elon is so focused on Xhitter that he does not even seem to own Tesla anymore but YEAH, would never buy a Tesla anymore.

Tesla is still where the majority of his money comes from, and that’s the money he used to buy Twitter and influence the election. Ironic admission: I own a Model 3; bought it in 2017 before realizing I’d vastly misjudged Elon’s character and was helping fund something truly awful. I have regrets.

Everything related to Elmo is political… that can’t be avoided anymore. You’ve always been ‘friendly’ with a guy that gone over the edge… now the sycophants will see you in a new light, not on ‘their’ side. This crap is the new reality of the usa.

@mkbhd.com i know you’ve heard all this before, but you can’t drive a cyber truck and take yourself seriously. There are levels to the style game beyond the obvious.. you know what im saying right?

Don't ya love when you make a decision based on what you want and what's best for you yet you get hate for it. People can't mind their own business, that seems to be a major problem that's only getting worse lately. You do what's best for you bro, that's all that matters. 🤘🤘

Somewhat surprised you don't mention the poor track record on manufacturing quality. Tesla has been plagued by stories on rust, breakdowns etc. that'd give me pause..

Oh I totally get that, so I should be specific: these are the pros and cons with MY vehicles that I purchased and actually used. I do see the headlines about both Tesla and Rivian issues, but had very few to report from my testing. Those bullet points are from my actual trucks
