Squishiness on trans rights is a dealbreaker for me because (a) it’s a straightforward issue of personal freedom and bodily autonomy much like abortion, and (b) the right is obviously coming after us cis gays next.

trans rights frankly is a top 5, potentially top 3 issue for me despite not being trans and not having any trans family being bigoted against trans folks not only hurts my trans friends and every trans person but is so predictive of further bigotry

I think the key is to start talking about it in personal rights terms. Once you can get government approval to look at someone’s genitals to confer a right, you can really do almost anything to them. Dems need to draw the line in the sand that these personal rights are not for the government.

It's probably one of the most glaring "emotions over logic" issues I have come across and the extent to which it has become a cornerstone of the culture wars has become one of the more concerning things I have seen since I can remember.

Consultants: ”Why don’t more people care about politics? Why do they live their lives as if they’ll be fine regardless?” Also consultants: “Let’s write off every group of people who live their lives as a political act and know they’re always one election away from being more repressed.“

It's all the same repression project. They just keep shifting the target to find a group marginalized enough that most folks will go along. And any victory quickly snowballs That's how they overturned Roe, only to pivot to birth control! Your rights are next, sucker

Right? Purely aside from the fact that there's nothing wrong with being trans, there's NEVER a case where someone uses the power to harm a small, defenseless minority to ONLY hurt that minority. It's always a door to hurting everyone the people in power want to hurt. You can't give any ground.

Yes anyone who doesn't conform to the idealised Nazi image will be in trouble eventually, first it's us Trans people, lets see what's on the chopping block next, either gay rights or possibly abortion so we can be like the cool kid in the White House 🤮

💯☝️ I would include that if you believe in equal rights, that belief must extend to all people, not just people who look like you do. Otherwise, you just believe in discrimination. It is as simple as that for me.

Equal employment. Not being discriminated against for changing (or not changing) your legal name. Being able to change name. Etc There are definitely issues to do with bodies and the two sexes that are tricky but they have very little to do with the question of trans rights in America as it stands.

did you know the first out trans d1 athlete in the ncaa played in 2010? did you hear about any problems in fairness before riley gaines came in fifth in 2022? i'm guessing probably not, because all sporting bodies already had regulation covering trans athletes and hrt.

These situations are incredibly difficult already. To think that some random strangers know how to handle them better than the person in question, their family and their medical team is unhelpful and unreasonable.

Also sad similar that the right thing will lose until society just adjusts. But that invites fights about Overton window pushing, tone-policing, etc. Like, are sports that important? No. Does anyone like public multi person restrooms? Also no. Are these arguments bad faith to start? Yes.

Unlike gay marriage though, trans rights are further along in the public mind than they seem. Normie straight cis people's assumptions about "how it should be" were already more or less in place by inertia and it's easy to pull them towards that. Trans rights are for now inside the Overton window.

Unfortunately "liberal" media ecosystems are actively trying to delegitimize that and make it seem like trans people have somehow overreached, but all the proposed policy is so obviously cruel or alienating (or just blatantly illegal) that the media campaigns have to climb uphill and seem hysteric.

Messaging like "Be who you wanna be, love who you wanna love, and still have equal life opportunities as everyone else" "Oh, and the freedom to poop and pee in peace" Would play pretty well. But is that conceding the framing? (sad it needs a "given consent" disclaimer here, but...)

like *at best* it comes from a place of cowardice, or a misguided sense of compromise, or being successfully lobbied by interests that lobby against other salient issues of the left, or a combination thereof. none of these traits are acceptable in the current moment

if an elite lobbying effort can convince you that you have to ban trans people from sports to survive in politics you straightforwardly do not have it in you to pass electoral reform, or stand up to the fossil fuel lobby, or do any of the difficult things that have to be done

then of course some of the politicians pushing this shit are ideological bigots which (maybe hot take but) should not be allowed on the left even if it means we lose forever

I just get grossed out by anyone in power who punches down at the most-vulnerable of my neighbors, and right now that's a tie between trans kids and undocumented folks. So yeah, it's a dealbreaker for me too.

I do think it's all about enforcing gender norms by attacking the folks who flaunt them most. Which is directly relevant to the whole GLBT alphabet but also cis straight people.

Even ignoring the clear morality of it, being squishy on it just tells me I can't trust you about *anything.* You need to stand for *something*, and if you get squeamish with a few shit heads yelling at you online why would I trust you do anything that would garner even more reaction.

I think the whole “personal autonomy is the universes greatest good“ thing works against social, well, anything, but you’re 1000% right about their next targets. I will bet any sum of money they are plotting how to get gay marriage back in front of a much friendlier Supreme Court. It’s coming.

"oh, another type of human being doing no real harm to those around them? yea, get tf away from them" it's literally just authoritarian jenga, pushing on random blocks until one comes loose and they can start picking away at the rest

I know a bunch of trans people (mostly online, some irl). Some suck, some I've heard of suck a ton. I bet a decent handful dislike me for one reason or another. They still deserve rights though, I don't need every trans person to like me, or for me to like every trans person, to know that.

Yes. People don’t have to understand what it means to be transgender in order to support basic civil and human rights and freedoms for trans people. All they have to understand is that no one is free or safe unless everyone is.

Human rights as a principle are very much all-or-nothing. There's no such thing as "human rights for some". Partial human rights is obviously just injustice. Anyone who compromises on who gets human rights has abandoned the principle, and have therefore lost me. And trans rights are human rights.
