We bought Article II of the United Nations Charter with the blood of a hundred million human beings, and less than a century later, it's being sold for nothing by people who don't even understand what they're doing.

i think this is what drives me nuts. people talk about how, say, the UN was founded by "starry eyed idealists" who didn't understand "reality." the truth is that the UN was founded by those who had just fought and *won* the bloodiest war in human history.

So much of our present crisis is coddled, ignorant, and short sighted people tearing down the institutions that protect them because they don’t understand that bad things can happen.

Eh, unsure if you're just trying to be glib, but the flying car problem is about people seeing them in movies and then complaining about it not being a real thing yet (and no, not helicopters). They don't know what is involved in making it real, hence the complaints.

I worked as remote help desk for a hospital right before the pandemic. Right after we got everyone setup for work from home, they laid off everyone. Admins said no one, by which they meant other admins, were in the building anymore. So why did we need IT? Same stupid energy.

It’s maddening. We’ve been blessed with enough wealth to give our kids a great start in life and fund a comfortable retirement, and the people with literally 100,000 times our wealth are willing to burn the country down to get just a little bit more.

A lot of the crackpot healthcare stuff comes from quite a powerful and wealthy 'alternate health' sector that has big interests in selling lies and distortions. They grew on the back of some valid critiques of mainstream healthcare, but also the staggering expense of the US system pushes that way.

It’s wild how humans qua culture run this cycle roughly every century, despite story after parable after myth about it. We are just effortlessly good at enabling leadership pyramids, built on the backs of those who had to clean up the last, which inevitably crumble as they necessarily self-corrupt.

The current hot trend in interior design is exposed brick that has had the plaster removed. Plaster is hydroscopic and pulls moisture out of the water soluble mortar. A plastered masonry wall will stand a thousand years. Exposed brick won't make it fifty. A metaphor.

That's why the exteriors of most old brick buildings have a facade of either natural stone (usually a hard stone like marble or granite) or expensive glazed brick. The facades aren't structural, so they only have to be mortared on their rear face and not their bottoms to be water resistant.

My dad, 1920-2015, contracted polio as a toddler. In late life post-polio syndrome rendered ineffective many of his adaptations to the disabilities caused by the early bout. The MAGA GOP & their enablers are a racist, sexist, xenophobic, eugenicist, LGBTQIA-hating death cult. We must stop them.

"reactionaries are house cats" will remain up there with "everyone is 12" in the "glib but possessed of eternal Truth" hall of fame

This is the irony of white supremacists declaring a war on immigrants to ”protect America from turning into the third world”. They are doing everything reminiscent of third world despots. Nepotism. Favoritism. Stirring ethnic conflicts. The economy designed to service the elite with servants.

I read a take about libertarians (but it apply to many other political families) "They are like house cats, they’re convinced of their fierce independence while dependent on a system they don’t appreciate or understand"

There is a lot to agree with here, but people are terrified of neurodivergence and unfortunately the science that notes no connection is playing catchup to the fairy tale that “vaccines cause autism” etc.

I keep thinking of a news story about the people bringing polio vaccine to Afghanistan at the risk of their own lives. The locals were murdering them. They persisted. One day they were confronted by one of their persecutors begging them to vaccinate his young son who had contracted the disease.
