One more thought on the whole "people going back to X" thing. I'm obviously quite biased, but I really think that atproto (which powers Bluesky and others) is about building a better internet in so many ways. But that requires people to use it. The answer to that is to build something better...

People that had thousands of followers over there (a third were probably bots) might not be getting the same traction here, and feel like they're more "important" over there, when they're really not. I liken it to going back to an abusive relationship.

I have about 1/10th the following I had over there. And I'd say I get about 1/10th of the engagement. Pre-Elmo Twitter was much better for me than Bluesky has been, and I miss it. But I left when Elmo bought it, and nothing would make me go back. And it's not a difficult call.

I’m not even remotely interested in building a following. I like to read, occasionally reply and post. Every time I peek at X, it is so unpleasant that even if I ever drop BSky it won’t be for X.

... and I get that. I know that tons of people building on atproto today know that as well. I think the launch of Spaces will be a real unlock in lots of other ways in terms of building lots of cooler stuff on atproto as well. But there's an element of inertia & collective action here as well.

You can't build a better internet if no one participates. And, so the people loudly announcing they're going back to X, strike me the same way that scabs crossing the picket line do: the rest of us our out here holding the line to create a better world. And you're just deciding "fuck it, too hard."

The most valuable aspect of this would be breaking out of the recommender algorithms. I much prefer to have my personal AI pulling and curating for me.

So, to me, the people talking about why they need to go back to X, even if I understand their reasoning, come across as scabs. And I have no respect for scabs crossing the picket line. Have some self respect and stand for something.

Thank you. Much more eloquent than me unsubscribing from all things Casey Newton and replying to his “it’s all a bunch of fun clubs now” post with a “you suck, are a massive hypocrite and don’t care about our democracy or victims of CSAM screed.

Exactly. I haven't really seen the "going back to X" stuff in my feed but I suspect that there's a Russian / RW psyop at work trying to get people off of BlueSky to stifle LW momentum, and onto "X" where they can be propagandized.

It’s a Nazi bar. They can make up all the excuses they want for drinking in a Nazi bar, but that doesn’t alter the fundamental fact that they choose to be in and help fund a Nazi bar.

The union analogy is beyond spot on. Practically literal. Social media has long been free labor we've been tricked into doing. I wonder how many people would respond to this framing. Do we unionize?

I think the current saddest sight on the Internet is the broken people at the Twitter Nazi & CSAM Bar desperately trying to convince others that everything is fine and they should totally come back to be groped, exploited and rufied because it’s “actually really really fun and safe here, bro”

Why would I go back to X? My primary reason to be here is to follow authors. Other things also, but authors. WHO ARE HERE. No longer there. They are here due to culture. Block early, block quickly. I do read political posts here. And some days I just skip them.
