A month ago, right before the Maine primary, Graham Platner went to Washington to be grilled about his candidacy’s viability by other Dem Senators. They asked if there was the risk of more allegations from women. He assured them “No.” Whether he lied or simply didn’t know is equally damning.

It’s super easy to guess (without even looking) which SCOTUS justices voted against birthright citizenship in Trump v Barbara. It’s gobsmacking it wasn’t 9-0.

Tales from Next Door, the world’s most annoying app. #nextdoor We took advantage of Memorial Day sales to buy a new TV. I wanted to upgrade to a 4K. Our old TV totally worked, but is old and doesn’t have much resale value, so we decided to put it out for our Recycling Bulky Items day. /1

I thought it would be neighborly to post on Next Door, “Hey…free 50 inch, working, plasma HD TV. Come and get it off the sidewalk!” I even included the model number and a photo. From the messages and comments, you’d think I was Best Buy. /2

“Will it fit in my car?” - I don’t know. It’s a free TV. “What are this dust flecks on the screen?” - Well, it’s sitting on a mattress under our rose bush on the sidewalk. It’s a free TV. “Is it a Smart TV with apps?” - Look up the model number. It’s a free TV. /3

Bummer that the Graham Platner campaign is imploding in the worst way possible because I really wanted to get one of those Maine Bicentennial “Dirigo” logo t-shirts he sports.

I don’t buy the “Graham Platner will just be a Fetterman” online hand-waving. He seems to be a lifetime, truly left of center guy. But my concern is he may have more skeletons in his closet. He’s had foot-in-mouth issues just a couple weeks ago using a slur (while talking about the tattoo no less).

Dispatch from Mossbirn, NZ: I don’t know what’s going on with this roadside sign. I don’t know if I want to know. But I’m grateful they didn’t spell “You” as “Ewe.”

The USA Gold in Men’s Hockey reminded me of a flight we took from Boston to Barbados. It was a vacation flight; everyone was hammered. The airline knew the route though, so the in-flight movie was “Miracle.” At the end, all the passengers were crying and hugging “GAWD, THAT WAS WICKED EMOTIONAL!”

Two guys in front of me in the coffee shop. The conversation was along the lines of “yeah, we just inked our Series A which gives us a run to summer. No talking B round yet, but if we get $12M revenue, we’ll see…” Unremarkable other than that they seemed like fetuses to me. Where’s my Geritol?

The dog was an oddly agitated this morning. She jumped right out bed and beelined it to the back door. I went to let her out and fortuitously glanced out the window before opening the door, because there in the middle of the backyard were two raccoons in flagrante delicto.

I occasionally pop onto Threads and was prompted to join their Community Notes system, so out of curiosity I did. After a little playing with it, I’m convinced that Community Notes itself is a cynical user engagement feature rather than any kind of a good faith moderation tool.

#AT40 I haven’t heard “Sister Mary Elephant” in decades, but this time I picked up the production detail of gating the “SHUT UP!” to make it sound like it’s blowing out the speakers, regardless of the volume.

#AT40 My college roommate’s sister played violin on “Le Freak” (and other Chic and Madonna songs, and more). It was always fun to see the platinum record on the wall of their family house in Maine.

post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't nirvana, pearl jam, soundgarden, or Alice In Chains. “Girlfriend” by Matthew Sweet pretty much cemented my musical taste for the next 35 years.

It seems like the Colorado Gay Conversion Therapist petitioner in the Supreme Court case yesterday is basically arguing that “Come on, we all know therapy doesn’t do anything, it’s just talking.”

Democrats need to stop calling the ACA Tax Credit a “subsidy”. It’s a tax credit for regular Americans who buy their own insurance. Rolling back the tax credit is a huge middle class tax increase. Democrats should be punching Republicans hard on this every time they are in front of a camera.

My wife and I were sequestered with COVID this weekend, so we did some catching up on movies. So…”Superman” was supposed to be good? Because damn, that was a colossal chore to watch.

I cancelled Hulu/Disney+ because of the ABC Kimmel suspension, but noticed that I can still watch the last two episodes of “Alien Earth” before the end of the billing period. So I’m not exactly a Freedom Rider, but damn that show is good.

Real conversation today: Cardiologist: It’s great that you lost 20 pounds. How’d you do it? Me: Reduced caloric intake and increased exercise. Cardiologist: Wow, people still do it that way?

97 years is a good run though. And he made all his songs free to the world when he could have cashed in far more aggressively. Now excuse me, I’m off to the park… /FIN

His songs are nerdy, WASP-friendly, Ivy League drollery but, man, they’re funny. His lyrics are way darker than the showtune sunniess of the music; a contrast thar was always core to the joke. /2
