I just wanted to know if I was too old to get a cushy fascism job, ended up researching glaciers

Curious about the specifics of DHS’s latest announcement, I turned to Google and… I guess I should have expected this

This is mostly accurate except it doesn’t get the pun but just swaps in the misspelled word. Plus it cites as a source the band that made this record:

About to make a dad joke, I googled to see just how unoriginal it was, and... no it isn’t. That isn’t true

I’m curious about the relationship between President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Chief Justice Earl Warren, two well-known political figures. Let’s see what Google can tell us in response to a query for “fdr and earl warren” (without quotes)

Wanted to find out when to arrive at a certain location to watch the NYC Marathon. Let’s ask AI Overview! First attempt, looks pretty good, even breaks the info down into a handy table. Though it seems a bit suspect that the men will start at 9:05 and may arrive at 9:00. Maybe we should try again?

Here’s a subtle one: Jake Thackray does indeed have a song called “The Gravedigger” but it is not in fact a translation of Brassens’ “Le Fossoyeur”

I was looking for a video of The State’s sketch about the guy who discovers the word “and” and... this AI Overview neither describes that sketch nor the linked www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5Kz..., which is indeed “a ridiculous, disjointed live broadcast” but not based on the word “and” at all

Hmm! How did this informal slang usage come about, I wonder? Why is it considered rude? [This was not in fact an attempt to search for “bs” but a botched URL autocomplete of “bsky.app”]

As co-author of Thackray’s biography, it’s fascinating and worrying to see how much AI has got wrong here because it is regurgitating misinformation from the internet. It’s no substitute for real research. 🧐 Heaven help us if the world is becoming more reliant on AI.
