For me, this was a central line in this article, "The majority of these stories are self-serving marketing bullshit peddled via unreliable narrators...." Your later observation that it's only going to get worse before the AI bubble bursts also seems true to me. #TheAIGrift

Wow! That didn't take as long as I thought. Maybe the bubble will burst really soon, not next year? 🤔 bsky.app/profile/mrsd...

www.cnn.com/2026/07/29/t... OpenAI lab leak was more extensive than we thought. OpenAI, in an update, said its rogue agent had also broken into several publicly available services and accounts. OpenAI says agents found several public-facing websites, including pages that share code, web utilities…

there's 5 main reasons they want you to think AI is now self-aware and "goes rogue" 1. product marketing misrepresentation 2. props up insane valuations for a sector not making money 3. scares lawmakers into trash legislation 4. distracts from technofascism 5. distances execs from accountability

but every single time you see a story that claims AI "went rogue" entirely on its own it almost always boils down to somebody either being a dumbass or actively trying to be misleading

The panpsychist arguments being wrapped around AI intelligence being already here because everything in the universe is inherently somehow conscious should be a tell. That makes any rando rock conscious, and robot vacuum cleaners, and the planet Jupiter. Hogwash.

That being said, someone is going to actually build a Roy Batty bot and be astonished when it predictably kills everyone in the lab.

I don’t doubt that it’s possible to create an actual AI, not this semi comprehensible simulacrum of regurgitated intellegience. But not today. Not for another 10-20 years will we be close. I fear quantum computing needs significant advancements before it’s possible.

Thanks for writing about this. People’s credulity around this stuff drives me crazy. They think the companies are showing exceptional honesty by “disclosing” this -- ”why would they make up something negative?” when it clearly aggrandizes their product.

I asked ChatGPT how these doomsday scenarios involving AI might happen. It replied: “I can explain how AI might pose a threat to humanity. However, there’s no need to focus on worst-case scenarios. I hope that answers your question.” Is there an AI survival bunker, or should I just ask ChatGPT?

The car industry pushed for reporting on "accidents" instead of "crashes" because, you know, accidents happen. *shrug* It deflects blame. Anthropomorphizing AI does the same thing. What's old is new yadda yadda yadda.
