I'm genuinely fascinated by this sort of weird pseudo-journalism. It vaguely looks like journalism but it doesn't actually care about labor, ethics, real-world impact, or even that the key IPO architect is an overt authoritarian

Like, I firmly believe the authors of the NYT piece really think they did a very good job. I suspect they're conditioned by ownership to believe that just sanding off all the relevant bits of truth is just professionalism.

How about the fact that the success of the SpaceX IPO depends on Musk creating a million person settlement on Mars, something that only the delusional could believe will happen in his lifetime, if ever. People thinking of investing need to be given a copy of this book to read.

So sure of fulfilling their "heavy burden of objectivity". It seems baked in...truth and facts can seem like an attack to their timid souls. Plus, the boss....

“Society News” always sells, it sells myth & image, but it sells. It is “Tabloidism”; it is replacing true journalism bc of corporate control of narrative in everything we are exposed to. Image making

If those are too hard, there's also the more simple question of "is this valuation warranted?" and "why is SpaceX bundled with grok and twitter?". Those seem like important questions when pronouncing someone a trillionaire based on the stock prices of companies with very little free float

they briefly touch on the possibility, but it's quickly dismissed they literally spend more time on mentioning party decor

Of course it does. Omission of facts that are so ugly that it *feela* biased even to acknowledge them is the most crucial technique of the neutrality theater journalism cult. NYT and NPR have raised this to a vertiginous level over the last 20 years. airbagmoments.wordpress.com/2017/04/29/m...

That IPO is premised on the insane ideal that Musk will create a million person settlement on Mars. Why won’t the media point out the enormous obstacle to that ever happening let alone happening in Musk’s lifetime? Did they watch too much Star Trek and now think it was a documentary?

We are told that robots are getting so advanced that they will take our jobs but that we absolutely must have manned space projects even though they are vastly more expensive than unmanned/robotic exploration. It’s gaslighting and the media is either falling for it or aiding and abetting.

And get even more Wall Street $$$! In the olden days economics was based on the idea that people (men) are rational decision makers. Free marketeers like Alan Greenspan bought into that fantasy which was why he was so shocked by the “irrational exuberance” of the markets that led to the crash.

This makes a lot of sense. We're going to colonize the solar system & live on uninhabitable planets because the earth will become uninhabitable? The value of Space X is based on a multi trillion dollar market based on the AI explosion which is going to take all your jobs? Crazy? What am I missing?

Superficial coverage has become so entrenched in tech journalism over the last two decades. It crowds out financial journalists' meticulous perusal of S-1s, 10-Ks, etc., to assemble accurate pictures of what is happening in an industry sector. This leaves the public woefully uninformed.

It's a race to the bottom between Trump and Musk to see who can kill the most people, do the most damage to the world and break as many laws as possible.
