A Democrat visiting Canada and making his first appointment with Danielle Smith is a really odd choice, which reveals either a startling naivety about Canadian politics or motives for the trip that are not first and foremost about understanding the Canadian perspective.

My first stop was Alberta, the only province not boycotting Californian wines. I spoke to provincial leaders about the importance of the Canadian market to California farmers and the importance of continuing close collaboration on dairy, beef and energy trade.

I think it's simpler than that: traditional Democratic national politics, which is performed from a defensive crouch. This Senator from California has to be seen hanging out in "the one province that isn't boycotting California wines", even as his message is that he doesn't like Trump's trade war.

Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, he walks into mine. A very odd choice indeed given all that's happening right now between Canada and US. Strange focus and misuse of resources.

The California wine industry claims it generates almost $85 Billion in 'economic activity' and is in a serious slump. Don't discount how much this is actually about wine🍇

This is insultingly stupid. Does he really expect anybody to believe that Canadians have just stopped spending money on wine because Californian wine is no longer an option? We get the same amount of tax revenue from French and Chilean wines. bsky.app/profile/schi...

Without American wine on Canadian shelves, Canadians are also missing out on tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue they would obtain from selling our wine.

This is why we're angry at Americans. It's not just Trump, it's not just Republicans, it's not just Congress…the entire place is full of ignorant enablers content to let this all continue.
