It's been a long week and you've all been very good, so I'm going to share — for the first time here on BlueSky — the ultimate Mrs. Peel #Caturday video. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you... 🔥CHARIOTS OF TREATS (sound up!)🔥

I don't pretend to be the Kreskin of ethical journalism, but I don't get how "why are you comfortable [doing x]?" is a reasonable way to frame a question. "Why do you enjoy cheating at bridge?" And "why are you comfortable [doing x {and everybody sees you doing x}]?" seems doubly... ...unhelpful.

Scott Robertson@sarobertson.bsky.social

Reporter: Why are you comfortable going in front of a camera saying we want to abolish the Indian Act without those consultations with the community? Mark Carney: That is exactly what I did not say.

When Bolsonaro called Lula "nine fingers" in an attempt to weaponize an industrial accident he suffered as a teen, I was reminded of a 1993 TV ad Canadian Conservatives ran mocking Cretien for his bell's palsy. In both cases, the voters reacted with stunned revulsion, and the slur backfired.

Here's a #TOpoli connection for you: the genius who decided it would be fun and popular to make light of Cretien's appearance was none other than celebrated lech and ex-mayor of Toronto, John Tory! What a bellend.

Your argument, no matter how finely crafted and rhetorically expert in its construction and delivery, is merely a plaything for right wing agitators. Your Churchillian orations will only ever be fun for them, despite how cunning your debate skills. Don't waste your time. And dump twitter.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Speaking as an Albertan, I cannot roll my eyes hard enough every time someone insists that Albertans are a separate people because of their "work ethic" and "entrepreneurial spirit," as though it was their hard work and ingenuity that put the oil in the ground in the first place.

If I were a sovereigntist who actually had a well-reasoned, fully costed, ideologically coherent idea of what was at stake for my province apart from Canada, I'd be insulted by the patronizing "whatever bothers them is real if it bothers them" approach that comes from "legitimate grievance" blather.

John Roscoe@johnroscoe.bsky.social

"But they *perceive* their grievances as legitimate, and that makes them genuine." I took some mushrooms in grade eleven that made me perceive my extremities as great, waggly bands of overcooked pasta, but that didn't make my arms and legs suitable for consumption in marinara sauce with a dry red.

What's next? More division and grift, natch, but what "injustice" will be the focus of the movement's next cause célèbre? Who knows!

'Tis but a scratch! I hope nobody was expecting these guys to end their campaign just because they lost by a ratio of 4:1. Au contraire! With loins girded, a spring in their step and fire in their eyes, they'll hobble onwards to the next humiliating defeat, and the next — this is how they live now.

“Don’t worry about it, it’s all bullshit,” shouts one attendee!

The sun rises on a separatist movement de-fanged and impotent, trounced under conditions which itself dictated. Will it relent? Will it renounce its cantankery and join the rest of us? No. The goal was never really separation; that apeshlt energy will now find mad, new causes to lament and bemoan.

"United We Roll" simmered into "End the Mandates" which morphed seamlessly into "Stop the Drag Queens" which soon begat "Save the Children" which was repurposed to "Axe the Tax" which set up a camp in a ditch by a highway until it met "Save the Ostriches" which retooled to become etc. etc.
