No kidding. He said when he started writing the book that he had struggled with the previous one & had fallen out of love with GoT. He thought writing another story would help, but I really can't blame him. Nobody is owed an ending & nobody would like what would happen if he actually did.

Good for him. What's he supposed to do? The story stopped working for him. You can't force a story you have bricked on. You just can't. If everyone is so eager to get the legacy canonized fanfiction (which is all it ever is when someone else finishes the series) there's fics on AO3

Look, I laud his ethical stance on this, but there is zero chance that whoever inherits his copyrights will not immediately whore it out. That's just the way the world works

I understand his position. Let him be. A lot of people simply grow weary and the Internet accelerates that weariness. People hound him relentlessly about it. I’d not finish A Song of Ice and Fire just out of spite if it were me.

As a fan that got in on the ground floor so many years ago, I have learned to move on. I just don't care anymore. He clearly doesn't care about the series and hasn't for years. Just forget about him and let him live out the rest of his days.

Based. As a writer, I don't think I'd want someone else to take my universe and work and just continue to milk it like that. We can see how that was handled with GoT season 8.

I'd already concluded a decade ago, despite his occasional protests, that we'd never see another novel in the series. He was enjoying the fame it gave him and spending all his time working on anything but the novel. When you procrastinate that much, it's clear your heart isn't in it anymore.

GRRM has only one life to live and finishing GOT doesn’t seem to make him happy anymore. I think it would be cool if he tried to find a creative way to get the series finished while he is still alive to supervise the ending e.g. write his favorite POVs and let another writer/fans do the rest.

I mean if he doesn't like it anymore he should just say so, no more "if it gets finished". Just say you're not finishing it. And I mean if you don't want to finish it then I really don't understand why he won't let anyone else do so after he's gone. He's not around so if it sucks who cares?...

I mean the ending of the show already sucks and he's still alive to have that legacy. And if he leaves his notes and appoints a good author then I'm sure they can write a better ending than the show. And again, why should he care if he's dead?

I mean I get it, it’s his art, he cares about and wants it to remain his. He wants it all outlive him as his creation. At the same time, finishing it has become an unbearable slog. That’s why I’m saying get creative. I bet he’s got the main story almost done and a bunch of POVs completed.

I can't imagine writing four books in a world I created, having thousands upon thousands of fans who love it, and then just...not finishing it. And then making sure no one will finish it. I want to be charitable, and I know no author owes anyone anything, but all this seems like a real dick move.

Is finishing them the point tho? Perhaps it already is finished. Cersei is queen but has no dynasty having lost her sons, Jon Snow and Stannis are dead. Cersei and Tyrion are both free of their family history. Soon winter will come & the white walkers will end humanity in Westeros anyway.

I really don't care if he finishes writing them or not, heck I've barely even started the first one. But if he's not going to finish just say so. And personally I find it weird that he cares what happens to his series after he's dead. If you won't finish the series why not let someone else do so?

Again I get it when you're still alive to see what happens to your story, you might get disappointed or whatever. Why should I care what happens to my stuff when I'm dead, it's not my stuff anymore, I don't physically own it, I don't have feelings, I'm dead.

Like I personally don't care about GoT. I don't even read the books. But I just really don't get why he's saying he'll finish the book if he won't. Just say you won't. And it makes no sense to me why anyone should care about their IPs after they're dead, you can't care about anything, you're dead...

Won't be the first time a book series doesn't get finished, for one reason or another. Authors don't owe readers books. There's no point complaining about not getting the next book in a series. There are plenty of other extremely excellent authors to read instead. People need to move on already.

Love the language where he's just a passenger in the situation like the rest of us. Who knows if I'll finish Winds of Winter. It's for the gods to decide. Sit down and write the book, you idiot.

It's his loss. When I started reading his work, I thought he was creating a series that would be remembered by future generations. Once I saw that he handed the reins to HBO for what remained of the stories, I was upset, but also felt sorry for him. The money was good, but he lost his legacy.

The irony is I started reading his series (circa 2005) because Robert Jordan was writing too slow. In the time since then Robert Jordan wrote a book, got cancer, died, Brandon Sanderson wrote three books to finish the series and then 12 more years have passed. George has released two books.

‘Martin said he would "hate" to give up on the series — though admitted he was still around 1,100 pages in. This figure — 1,110 pages — is one that he's quoted since at least December 2022’ Pretending to be writing a book - just tell people the truth.
