I’m torn on this one because I support it for completely different reasons, and that’s mostly because TikTok is a cesspool where it promoted those challenges where kids vandalized bathrooms, to calling for bomb threats to encouraging scams and plastic surgeries for minors

Lol imagine killing Twitter as well as getting rid of tiktok, looks like the entire youth has just gonna be migrating to Instagram.......Or onto bluesky entirely where there aren't any bots to manipulate algorithms at all Way to kill your AI training programs......

Honestly with how many small businesses were able to thrive because of the app, it’s no wonder the American government wants to shut it down. It’s never been about the info, it’s been about keeping people quiet and in their places.

So let us form an American LLC & buy it with the intention of keeping it in the same hands that are no threat to begin with. Fake patriots are worried what may be revealed. Tik Tok contact me.

This is ridiculous. China has plenty of data already & VPN's let folks reach the site anyway. Are we supposed to sell it to Russia, is that the oligarch plan? Are they just trying to blackmail China into license deals in the Chinese market? Tick tock, the clock is running for Tik Tok, I guess.

I hope they don't sell. So the US gets locked out of TikTok? Who cares? Why does the US get the right to control every damn thing? No thank you.

This should be interesting. Willing to bet that seeings as Trump is elected and became pro-TikTok after an investor convinced him "it ain't bad." I can imagine it gets banned, then unbanned. So I doubt this will stick. Even if the platform is hot garbage and addictive like crack.

There is a major concern about a Chinese company owning an app that is so extensively used for American data harvesting. So the government is wanting to have the US-facing app sold to an American company to keep that data out of the hands of non-Allies.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you. I do think there is a legitimate concern with Tik Tok’s gathering of user data by a foreign adversary, but also think it’s a pretty small concern all things considered.

John Oliver makes a great point. The company and organisation behind TikTok is most certainly not "good" and is pretty dodgy... but so is Meta, Apple, Google, X... pretty much every other social media and tech company

Ah, but those are *American* companies; they're allowed to manipulate American citizen data. The issue isn't "is the company using its power for evil," but "is the company using its power to support *foreign* evil." Domestic evil is just free speech! …I am so tired of all this bullshit.

It could be that, but China is a superpower in global politics, and due to the nature of their government, they could force TikTok to share data they've collected. U.S. got nervous when they found out government officials had the app on their phones. Everyone be careful with apps is all.

The USA will not tolerate Chinese-owned apps spying on you! Only good ol’ American companies get to do that (because there are no meaningful data-privacy laws (because the same lawmakers who voted for this are totally fine if it’s Facebook and Google doing the spying)).

I have no love for TikTok, but the blatant xenophobic double-standard at work here is kinda impressive. ByteDance isn’t accused of doing a single thing that US-based companies haven’t been repeatedly caught doing for years. But they’re *foreign*, which is the unspoken exception, it seems.

I've found plenty of science, history, and other information on TikTok. I think its really making a point to watch the right people for your facts. Sure, there's a lot of crap on it, but lots of informative stuff too.

The first moves to ban came in were in 2020, long before "tiktok became the primary platform for calling out the genocide in palestine." It really is just about nobody in DC wanting China to effectively own the top US social media app, with all the potential for screwing with us that entails.

Lol. I can think of a few reasons as to why it would be better for those who use it and those who don't for it to be banned rather than the proposed alternative. But what do I know? I'm just another unpaid cloud serf.

Of course, greedy companies in the US would use the government to eliminate a competitor who taking their views and money! Sometimes I wonder if they will come after Bluesky the same way!

Well I meant destroy in general. I know they can't do it the same way with this platform but I feel Musk will try something to destroy it since he would blame it for "stealing" his X users.

Bluesky is open source on purpose. If he buys it everyone shrugs and opens TanSky across the street. I'm sure he would love to Money his problems away, but he can't buy love, which he would need to do to keep a user base. Not a good comparison.

true, but tiktok is Chinese and controlled by the CCP, a paranoid hive of scum and villainy. Meta may be a hive of scum and villainy but it's our hive of scum and villainy. god that's a bad excuse. #justnationalsecuritythings
