jrpg isn't a real genre. its a useful shorthand and comparative term (i.e. if you like tales games you'll probably like falcom games) but when more academically discussing things like whether the genre has "evolved" enough or not it becomes tautologically useless

by which i mean like. souls games and monster hunter games are both rpgs made in japan that have evolved and experimented in unconventional ways and then people just start saying well they're not jrpgs anymore so its like ok this discussion is pointless then lol

'useful shorthand and comparative term' is all any genre has ever been!

in conclusion they should make a diablo style final fantasy ARPG with insane synergies and a SMT style turn based mass effect with social links and dungeon crawling. for world peace

its really funny to me that arpg as an acronym can also mean like 50 different things depending on who you talk to despite it encompassing all of it

arpgs basically have nobody making barrel bin diablo clones anymore and the ones that are still successful culturally are like diablos shambling corpse and path of exile and yet arpgs as the acronym is still basically only used for diablolikes. its kind of awesome in a sense
