jrpg isn't a real genre. its a useful shorthand and comparative term (i.e. if you like tales games you'll probably like falcom games) but when more academically discussing things like whether the genre has "evolved" enough or not it becomes tautologically useless

RPG as a genre isn't all that real either. Give me any criteria to call something an RPG and I bet you I can find games people will swear aren't RPGs that have them. People get so hung up on terminology that the things become chains to prevent you from fun rather than crutches to help you find it.

by which i mean like. souls games and monster hunter games are both rpgs made in japan that have evolved and experimented in unconventional ways and then people just start saying well they're not jrpgs anymore so its like ok this discussion is pointless then lol

LOL, it is such nonsense that people insist Dark Souls isn't a JRPG. If a Polish game dev made an RPG and a bunch of people outside of Poland started claiming it's 'not Polish' because it's not similar enough to the Witcher, those people would be told to fuck off, and rightfully so.

Ahh yes the long practice of dubbing something not a JRPG for arbitrary reasons (which is usually a thinly masked "see I LIKE this game and that other anime shit is for losers") see also Zelda and Pokemon

But yeah "Wizardry is foundational to JRPGs but only entries made after Sir-tech stopped making em count as JRPGS" both shows how arbitrary and vibes-based it is but also somehow isn't the most bizarre thing I can say about the term

rpgs have always been a popular genre with worldwide cross pollination and different evolutionary lines. jrpg style games made in the west growing in popularity is just another extension of wizardry style games blowing up in japan in the 80s. everyone's in conversation with each other

in conclusion they should make a diablo style final fantasy ARPG with insane synergies and a SMT style turn based mass effect with social links and dungeon crawling. for world peace

Or you could argue that JRPG has become a genre, distinct from ARPG and TacticalRPG, but that the J isn’t strictly geographical but clearly orientalist since it relies on hard to define « Japanese looking » (to us) features. +some gameplay elements are JRPG, i.e battle/exploration transitions

We still call some games metroidvanias. Other games are roguelikes. Others still are roguelites. 4X is a shorthand that saves you zero time, because you almost always still have to explain it to someone. JRPGs as a shorthand for Japanese-style role playing games is goofy, but people get it.

I don't use it that way and it's not largely understand that way, as any vague adventure game made by Japanese folks. Genres come about from copying something good/or popular. When I say jrpg I refer to dragon quest, final fantasy and everything in that mold.
