Never heard of this man before, but very much noticed the slide in UI quality over the last decade+. I normally upgrade all devices on release day, but so far have refused to install MacOS 26 & iOS26 on any of my devices bc of liquid glass. I only installed it on my iPad bc I wanted windowing.

The reason that Dye left was the same reason Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU. He had the bag thrown at him. Also, I didn't think Liquid Glass was that bad, but overall Apple UI design has been mid for the last 10 yers. Hopefully Lemay goes more back to the Jobs era design.

Enjoyed reading this this morning. I had forgotten Dye's history was as a brand designer. But I now remember that his elevation to leading design caused a dust up in the general design community. The fear really did prove to be true.

Really great coverage of this story. I’m interested in your footnote “… Ive’s utter disdain for Dye’s talent, leadership, and personality.” That doesn’t match with anything I can find. There’s an early quote from Ive saying “Alan has a genius for human interface design.” Is the disdain more recent?

His opinion changed by the time he left, and changed even further after leaving, per my sources, who are, as they say, familiar with the matter.

I don’t see how you can say that Dye’s moral compass isn’t aligned w/ Apple’s by going to Meta. Apple has gone out of their way to bribe Trump, starting 2/ inauguration and all the way to giving him a gold bar. That’s not even including the ICE Block stuff. Apple’s moral compass has aligned with Meta

I would suggest you consider that Trump and U.S. national affairs had nothing at all to do with the ethics and moral alignment I was writing about. And that it’s a problem if you attempt to view every single thing through that prism.
