In addition to ephemeral messages, Wickr (NLA) notified you when a recipient took a screenshot. I think you hit the sweet spot with private messaging ala Safari. Let’s call it “Grubermode”

“Disappearing messages” are security theater. I think and hope that people at Apple are smart enough to recognize that, and have the integrity not to lie to users the way others do. They’re pretty consistent in that regard, especially when it comes to security.

You're missing my point: Disappearing messages are not security theater. One of the use cases are people with stuck in abusive relationships with spouses (or parents) reading messages on the phone. Many others exist; I encourage you to do some research.

Only if you don’t protect it with actual security, i.e. encryption using a strong passcode. If you do that, the rest is irrelevant. Security theater only protects against idiots, and if you have anything at all worth protecting (privacy is enough!) it’s best not to assume only idiots will attack you

Fake security/privacy is the worst sort of security/privacy! Unless Apple also use some sort of photography blocking technology, there is no such thing as a "disappearing message" and you should live your life believing that is the case! If you send a message think it can disappear, you risk ....

Very interesting to see that virtually everyone commenting against this idea clearly didn’t read the article nor have they used the feature in other apps. The current ability to delete message in iOS is not the same as disappearing messages.

I would give my left ball for Apple to make a stand alone iMessage app (one not entwined with SMS or RCS). Sever it from phone numbers too, make as full featured as possible. I feel tying it all together was fine early on, but it’s time to separate it out.

I think the real reason why Apple hasn't implemented this feature is that iMessage and the Messages app hasn't been seriously developed or improved on in years. I used to be an avid user of Messages on Mac and iPhone. But friends wanted to use WhatsApp, so I tried it. 1/2

Fwiw, audio messages already disappear by default—the receiver can choose to "keep" them. I think it's a misnomer to say iMessage doesn't support disappearing messages—it doesn't support disappearing text messages, but does support disappearing audio messages.

I mean, people can just delete their entire text threads if they want to. Personally, I like being able to search my texts for things I sometimes need to refer back to, but I always welcome choices for stuff like this
