Third Way, a professedly "center left" group, is spending tens of millions of dollars to convince voters to vote for Republicans in November

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

This is a glorified single-source interview with the head of Third Way. It quotes far more moderates saying they support the progressive candidates in the general election. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/06/u...

That's really concerning to hear about Third Way spending money to support Republicans. It feels like there are a lot of confusing influences in politics these days.

Isn't it enough that our financial system (Capitalism) is Inherently RightWing? And modifying it is the only thing we aren't allowed to vote on. Do they really have to destroy us with RightWing policies when we are inevitably crushed by the RightWing financial system Dogma doesn't permit to discuss?

Uncommitted, not because of support for genocide, but because of support for taxing the rich

Just a reminder that Third Way gets its "polling data" from Blueprint, a polling and public opinion research firm owned by centrist billionaire Reid Hoffman. It's a convenient way to give Dems their marching orders & for the party to very quietly embrace Citizens United.

this is bullshit. i dont know a single dem that will vote gop. not one. i am a centrist but love democratic socialism, its goals, and the enthusiasm of young people

If they weren't trying to impact 2026 races where progressives won primaries, they would save this stuff for after November. They know what they're doing.

Human nature rears it's ugly butt... The Democrats goal must be Republicans lose on November 3rd 2026 and Republicans lose on November 7th 2028

100% DSA caucuses with Democrats, so they are, de facto, Democrats, in exactly the same way that Independent Senator Angus King or Independent Senator Bernie Sanders are Democrats. This media DSA narrative is worse than the red state vs blue state bs they've been gaslighting us with for decades.

As someone who actually reads the NYT and tracks the comments section for popular sentiment, let me tell you...most of the folks in the comments for this were having none of it. Quite a few older people from various midwest states saying get out of the way and let the progressives in.

How about we just call this something other than democratic socialism? Something like common decency. Or common sense. Or the American way. Or rational, responsible, reasonable human being. Americans are so petty, selfish, entitled and stupid they can't even see what makes good sense.

If there is a DSA candidate on the ballot and a Republican candidate on the ballot, then swaying people away from voting for the DSA candidate is pushing them to vote for the Republican candidate or just stay home. This isn't rocket science. 🙄

I believe his point is that if Third Way is choosing to direct resources at directly attacking DSA, it will be undermining many candidates who've already been nominated and could contribute to their defeat. I don't think he's suggesting they will literally be spending money supporting Republicans.

What the NYT reporter says in the comments section also looks contrary to what G Elliott Morris posted Shane G says as primary season ends all wings are going to going to focus on beating Republicans

So this seems poorly phrased, but my guess is that its not an allusion to actively spending to get Rs elected but that the money they are spending against other dems is damaging the party brand to the advantage of republicans. But if thats what he meant he should have been clearer.

Okay. There are DSA member who are the current candidates for the 2026 elections. Part of “Between now and 2028” IS THE 2026 ELECTION! In which they are attacking DSA members who are the Democratic candidate. If they discredit the Democratic candidate, they could vote for a third party, they could

Yes, I can. Third Way is spending $15 million to discredit DSA members “between NOW and 2028.” Can you read? What’s “between now and 2028”? A midterm election in November? In which DSA members are current Democratic candidates? Almost like you’re deluding yourself into defending this shit.

I voted Republican *ONE TIME* when I was young, inexperienced and very new to politics I voted for Reagan in 84 I voted for them because Republicans looked organized -- They looked like a party that got shit done I finally learned that they got the WRONG SHIT DONE *NEVER AGAIN*

Third Way are just proposing to spend that money; it's a tiny sum nationwide; and please, everyone, reposting this is taking the New York Times' bait. The NYT editors want to set the agenda for what is talked about. If you don't like that agenda, don't give them the power to frame the conversation!

not only is this not true, as so many have pointed out, you’re doing exactly what they want. third way is like 5 guys and a billionaire, there’s no “there” there, no influence on anyone outside the media, no votes that will ever change because of them it’s consultant grift, don’t make them relevant
