My daughter and I have decided to refer to our shelter dogs as “used” “recycled pets” or “preowned”

I think about this every time I meet someone (in my area, usually an older, affluent white woman) who “cares passionately” about animal rescue and protecting pollinators/planting native plants but won’t support affordable housing or Black Lives Matter

The eternal question of why the annoying online subject matter community leaderboard has to start with dogs, then cats, even before you get to why didn’t they fly the eagles to Mordor, and why I especially hate political people who almost but don’t quite overlap with me

Everything serious I've ever read by people who spend long hours doing the hard & dirty work of animal welfare has said we must combine a cull with fixing with greater law enforcement (& in some cases new regs) with a big public ed campaign to have a *prayer* of zeroing in a sustainable situation.

The way people are unhinged about animals is worrisome. I love animals. When I started joining local rescue and lost/found pet groups I felt like maybe I didn’t love animals quite as much as I thought because damn these people are other levels.

Animals instantly liking you over other people is a sign of good character. Instantly liking animals over other people is a sign of misanthropy.

My avatar includes a Catalán Sheepdog. It lives nearby with a littermate and its sire. Their owners lived in Barcelona 4 years & imported a breeding pair. I visit the humans, have coffee and pet dogs. The animals stay here when the people travel. They just returned from Japan. Extended family.
