Everyone is rightly focused on his "low wage foreigners" comment but I'm infuriated by the "we're going to restore dignity to the working class by bringing back manufacturing." NO YOU WON'T. MASS HIGH WAGE FACTORY EMPLOYMENT FOR NON-COLLEGE EDUCATED WORKERS IS NOT COMING BACK. YOU KNOW THIS.

JD Vance says his faith makes him averse to “low wage foreigners”

Modern factories do not lucratively employ half the men in the town straight out of high school to work an assembly line on union contracts. That was a weird blip in the 1950's when automation hadn't taken off yet and the US was the only country in the world whose factories weren't blown to shit.

I think the problem is less pointing out that the disappearing of manufacturing in, i.e., Allentown, sucked for a lot of people is less of a problem than the number of politicians whose solution to it was "make it 1962 again by science or magic"

As a kid I'd hear people lamenting that you used to be able to graduate high school, start at the mill the next day, and work there until you retired. They spoke of this like it had been that way since the dawn of time, rather than a deal that exactly one generation got.

Exports accounted for less than 5% of GDP in the 1950’s. Mainly, we were building stuff for each other. 90% top marginal tax rates and 48% corporate income tax encouraged broad distribution of wealth, with the top 1% holding a steadily declining share of wealth, until a reversal began in 1980.

It just makes me so mad because, as much as I loathe talk about 'economic anxiety' I can hardly blame people for expecting mass manufacturing jobs to magically re-appear when POLITICIANS KEEP PROMISING THAT. Makes me so mad I want to write a book. (This book). www.amazon.com/dp/191448711...

I enjoyed this. If it’s not manufacturing, what are the alternatives? Care? Energy/Infrastructure? Services? Perhaps they aren’t as palatable as the perception of a factory job?

It's almost certainly services (which include everything you listed). Manufacturing + Farms employ like 9-11% of Americans and that number is not likely to go up. Most people do and will work in services and that's... not a bad thing just because we've gendered ourselves into thinking it is.

The US runs since 2016 throughout the two genocidal presidents Trump and Biden, a 1960s USSR government including all oligarch creation, corruption and incompetence. Since US is bankrupt and EURUSD going to 4, the US can become the new Vietnam for the globe, with manufacturing at 4 EUR/hour

Manual jobs are of course still needed, but they're not needed because manufacturing is resurgent. They're just needed because they're generally societally important! Manufacturing employment is trending downward even as manufacturing production trends up.
