Nintendo is involved to a small capacity, but Niantic split up into two companies awhile back. Nintendo has no current ties to the company selling the data. But obviously they were involved when it was being collected.

what I want to know is who the fuck owns Pokemon Go. this story isn't actually new: a year ago, Niantic Inc. sold Pokemon Go and all of their licensed games of its ilk to a Saudi Arabia company. question: why were they allowed to do that doesn't nintendo have to approve it did they approve it etc

"umm nintendo doesn't own pokémon" thanks i am familiar with pokémon, but i think nintendo has its nose in it enough that they might not love the association with Actual War a good way to change things actually is to find someone sufficiently close to them who is sufficiently embarrassed by them!

i can't believe i'm having the existence of game freak explained to me and being told i "just want to get mad at nintendo again". fucking incredible

i am so not mad at nintendo that other people regularly get mad at me for it

The Pokémon Company International, which owns the licensing rights to the franchise as well as the domestic publishing rights to the Pokémon games, is in fact owned jointly by Nintendo and Game Freak. Nintendo does own Pokémon, so these people aren't even right.

some clown was telling me "what is nintendo supposed to do? they only own a third of pokémon" my guy they OWN A THIRD OF POKÉMON i think they can at least CHIME IN

I will say though, this may be somewhat out of Nintendo's hands at this point. Niantic used Pokémon Go data to train an AI model, and then partnered with a defense contractor to use that model to guide drones. That partnership was announced last December.

honest question - how much is this story reaching outside the usual gaming internet circles? because I agree that nintendo probably wouldn't like having that association but I'm not sure if most people even know, and nintendo is probably satisfied to continue appearing ignorant, sadly

i have no idea but it probably wouldn't take much. i don't think the current clusterfuck of wars are especially popular, and nintendo is the nice family-friendly etc game company

The way I keep hearing this myself…. I didn’t know there were enough brand loyalty purists to be so adamant about every possible technicality that removes accountability from Nintendo. They signed off on, controlled, and built sooooo much shit that led to this, the least they can do is address it???

to everyone saying this: while pokemon go is developed and operated by niantic, its published by the pokemon company, which is 33% owned by nintendo and ultimately controlled by a lot of nintendo execs. so, a statement from TPC abt this would be just as good as a statement from nitnendo imo.

It’s good that this is getting attention – again – but the last time people made the connection between Niantic and the defense establishment, it was enough to get me to uninstall it forever. It’s kinda sad that it got memory-holed enough that it’s a thing again.

I think I remember when ICE was making Pokémon memes, TPC’s eventual official response was a very milquetoast “we’re not a big fan of what they’re doing with our IP” and no legal action so, my hopes are not high :/

But it circulating again will reach more people who know more about how to approach this. If, en masse, users of Pokemon Go requested data deletion of their app, that would go straight to Niantic. Enough of those requests might enable the org to reflect. I don't have a lot of faith...

in technology companies, but our anger and outrage serves a purpose. Giving up to nihilism is how these things can continue. It's the consent they wanted to badly to pull from us. And talking about it informs participants who might have been too young to see those discussions to begin with.

imma be honest Niantic ties to the CIA ties waaay before this, as in were founded by someone who previously worked for the "state department" and who received funding from In-Q-Tel the investment arm of the CIA.
