Why is it whenever I read a rat/EA writing, all I can think of is a dude in a shitty fedora at thanksgiving saying "Maternal unit, can you please pass the sodium chloride?? I need to season my avian dinosaur"

This just isn’t true at all: “The sixth virtue is empiricism. The roots of knowledge are in observation and its fruit is prediction. What tree grows without roots?”

Yudkowsky is sort of the proto-this-type-of-guy, fedora and all. Like the stereotype is partially formed from him

I feel like I stumbled into some sort of rabbit hole of internet culture that I shouldn't know. I considered myself chronically online, but the discovery of Yud feels like I just found the missing link

It's a cursed knowledge. Was.. rather funny to see the lightbulb pop up for a friend when I've mentioned that "rational fiction", "hp & mor" and "roko's basilisk forum" all exist because of the same single person

He wrote HPMOR, and "rational fiction" is a result of that And "basilisk" was a post by "Roko" on LessWrong, Yukowsky blog's and namesake forum. He basically popularized it because of his intense reaction in the reply to it

Jesus Christ, this is the most accursed knowledge I've ever been granted

It's a rabbit hole of 20 years of internet community growing and splintering around a guy who hit the right tone for a certain demographic to listen to him too much Also most of it is American Christian/etc half-remembered religion stuff wrapped in "atheism"

I think one of the recent things that had me utterly floored was Yudkowsky using his fanfic as a reference for how to write fiction In 2026, not 2016 He... Didn't improve, and has no other references... It's almost sad in this "wow this is worse than I expected" way

I feel like every suburban white guy was Yud at some point, but either grew out of it or something else happened. This is just unreal
