Design legend Margaret Calvert is 90 today. Look at that cake! If you've ever admired a road, rail or metro sign in Britain it's likely she had something to do with it. One of Britain's design heroes - happy birthday to her. Photo by: @oshgallerylondon (IG) Cake by: mybaker.co

I saw an exhibition that included her road sign work at the Design Museum some years ago. It was fabulous. I had no real sense of quite how big those blue motorway and green A-Road signs were…obvious really when you think of it. The typeface was 😘 top notch. Happy birthday Margaret!

Compare the confusion of privatised rail company signage today with the simplicity of Margaret Calvert's use of design and typography for our transport modes - and weep. A heroine of design indeed. Happy Birthday!

Sadly, we are losing the simplify of Kinnear and Calvert's design with local authorities adding superfluous lettering because drivers no longer understand sign meanings. Officer's assume this sign needs verbal explanation b/c drivers are no longer taught to understand it.

Saw her talking about how she had to defend her road sign designs against politicians who thought they knew better. She wanted upper and lower case place names because it gave the words quickly recognisable shapes but some MPs felt we should stay with block capitals for various odd reasons.

Indeed. The best designs are the ones that seem inevitable and become almost part of the landscape.
