Great. They should NOT be appointed for life. We should not have to watch our courts our leaders our government age and develop dementia before our very eyes. Term limits, age limits and mandatory retirements at age 70. That’s long enough. And I’m saying this as an elder advocate. Know when to leave

They have a duty to defend our constitution, which includes the fifteenth amendment. When they don't, the job of checks and balances is to find a way to remove them. This fits. I agree set an age limit that removes them.

Before getting excited about the prospect of forcefully standing up to GOP authoritarianism and nakedly partisan interpretation of the Va statute's definition of "election," please remember the Dem party's terror at ever doing anything that might spark criticism from the NYT or WaPo editorial pages.

That’s normally a fair critique, but the fact is that the VA Democrats did exactly that by pushing through, and winning, the redistricting vote, despite the nakedly hypocritical tut-tutting of the Washington Post and others of their ilk.

Democrats are also terrified of doing anything to earn votes that don't magically appear from "disgruntled Trump voters". If they do this they may win more elections nationwide, because people are paying attention. Then they'd be expected to pass more popular legislation, which big donors hate! 🧐

The leadership of the Dem party is comprised of geriatrics who don't have energy for a fight and younger technocrats who temperamentally are conflict and risk averse and prefer small ball wins rather than big swings which runs the risk of a miss. Republicans are crazy and Dems are small.

except democrats have redistricted to their advantage and taken action they just got stymied by the courts in this case. no matter what dems do it seems this lazy narrative is out there to convince ill informed people that they never do anything.

action.noaction.no

it’s as lazy as the media parroting the idea that “dems need to stand for something not just oppose trump” when there are volumes and volumes of actual policies they advocate for but it’s easier to just repeat the same narrative and low info voters just believe that to be reality

The disconnect between the rage and willingness to fight among the lower ranks and voters and among those at the top of the party and what remains of the liberal media is huge and only getting bigger. Something has to change.

Say you do pass a bill lowering the age. And you do successfully appoint new judges quickly. On what grounds is the court able to take up a decided case again in time for the August primaries? “We didn’t like the original outcome” doesn’t really pass legal muster.

Lowering retirement age is a neutral move. Right wingers doing it will be bad and antidemocratic because of intent. Removing the judges that are acting legitimately bad and anti-democratic isn't the same.

That's the sort of idea that, on a good day, I might come up with, esp when I worked on the Hill and for a governor. And it sounds no more aggressive than what Utah Repubs are doing with their Supreme Court – and, it should be noted, every current Utah justice… 1/ bsky.app/profile/kdby...

While I have no idea if the Virginia Supreme Court will or won't throw out the redistricting the voters approved, as someone who thinks procedure should (so to speak) be done according to Hoyle, I find the Dems' case (that what the legislature did was close enough) to be less than compelling.

... was appointed by a Republican governor. (last time a Dem appointed a justice there was in 1984) Still, I'm not sure I'd recommend it. Besides institutional concerns, how certain are people it could work _in time_? And what court would hear challenges to the law? 🤔 #redistricting #Virginia 2/

Not fun seeing all the "Dems at the Federal level can't do *anything* unless we vote them into power" shitlibs saying Dems in Virginia probably can't / won't / shouldn't so this. GFY

And since nowhere in the Constitution is the “Office” of Supreme Court Justice defined, a new Congress and Admin could do the same by defining it as being held by someone younger than 65 and for less than 10 years.

I prefer the “write legislation defining an election as starting on election day and make it retroactive” option, but let a million flowers bloom.

The existing map in Virginia contains racially-gerrymandered majority Black VRA districts that SCOTUS just ruled unconstitutional in Callais. The leg should simply declare that the existing map is unconstitutional per SCOTUS and impose new maps that are coincidentally what the voters passed.

I’m all for applying pressure, I just don’t want people to think this is practically a done deal. It sounds like it’s still very much a long shot (and that’s a good motivator to apply pressure)

Did the defeatist ‘but but but process’ commenter block me or is he still running his mouth in the comments about how Dems need to lay down for the fascists to take over???? Poison — we should have ZERO TOLERANCE for that kind of rhetoric given the high stakes of this political moment
