I don't think that's scripture.

Q: Pope Leo cited Matthew 25:35 to critique Donald Trump's mass deportation agenda. How would you respond to Pope Leo in scripture? MIKE JOHNSON: Sovereign borders are biblical and right and just. It's not because we hate the people on the outside. It's because we love the people on the inside.

The closest Johnson can get is Leviticus's "Love your neighbor", but that follows the account of the mythical invasion of Canaan by the Israelites. Myth means "widely believed and meaningful". Santa Claus is mythical in the US.

These guys can twist scripture with as much alacrity as they twist the constitution and laws. I'd love to hear a debate between Leo and MAGA Mike. Leo understands the true meaning of scripture, he would not countenance it being twisted to justify bigotry, oppression, violence and greed.

Someone tell Mike Johnson to read Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus’ words directly! How will Trump and this administration ever escape from being CONDEMNED TO HELL?

This drives me up the wall because you just know as young people they would go occupy seats, en masse, at coffee shops and the like, reciting (surface level) scripture at each other so that everyone else would know just how Truly Virtuous they were.

NLT NKJV “When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. Read Leviticus 19

Time and again the Israelites - who were the heroes of the Bible story as far as I can see - were forced into exile, trekked across the desert to find a new home etc. I don’t know where in the Bible it says they were supposed to stay on one side of the border. The Good Samaritan was an immigrant.

I'm sure he's one of the "Christians" who support Israel getting back to their "biblical" borders so that Jesus will return for the second coming. Imagine thinking so little of your savior that you think he will get lost if the maps are different after 2000 years....

Jesus lived his entire life in a territory occupied by a foreign power. As it is written, "We are occupied. Have you forgotten how put down we are? All your followers are blind. There's too much Heaven on their minds."

Agmh yes, that classic bit in the Bible where Jesus says "you can enter the Kingdom of Heaven, just as long as you pay the me $1m otherwise we'll throw you in jail..."

In Matthew 25:31-46, it doesn’t say as you do to the least of these Americans. It only states the least of these brothers and sisters of mine All of us 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

I don’t think there were sovereign borders at the time. And yes, you are right. Christ never said that we should love people “on the inside” more than on the outside. To suggest otherwise is blasphemous.

Matthew 25:35 NLT [35] For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. Mike Johnson, the current actions of the administration isn't biblical and just. In fact, what he just said was heresy, if not close to blasphemy.

Is "thou shall not lay with boyfriend and lie and say it's because thou is traveling while away from home while thou is married" in there? I know he would understand that one.

What’s wrong with religion is people like him who think it should exclude rather than include others. All too common. My club makes me better than you.

I know this is stating the obvious, but what does "loving the people inside, not hating the people outside" even mean? Does he think this is some kind of either/or?

Johnson isn't a Catholic. He's a Southern Baptist. In Johnson's mind: Popeshmope. OOPs, not a phrase a Southern Baptist would use.

No thought into actual words and meaning just spewing something that sounds informed and righteous in the most Mr Roger’s delivery possible. Such a performative believe me because I say it calmly and with the air of authority. He is awful.
