Yet again, the EU surrenders to Trump. After facing pressure from the US State Department, @kajakallas.bsky.social's EU foreign service pulled out of a conference this week at the last minute – because one of the panels dared to discuss American disinfo in Europe.

Perhaps drop the euphemism "disinformation" (so cherished by established media) & just say "Lie." Every word out of the felon's face anus is a lie as well as every suckophant he's put in place.

What started off as a great idea, ( the EU)seems to have badly lost its way & be in the hands of too many of the wrong people, for the wrong reasons. It seems to represent the will or interests of Europeans, less & less. Sad to see. Hard to imagine how it can survive in its current form.

as somebody else just noted here, tho' ..., Credit to the US for making the point the conference was trying to make about US foreign interference in European democracies for them, thus bringing more attention to the conference and its themes than they could have possibly hoped for. 🤔

maybe it's a case of "not worth the trouble". The world is a complex place. Maybe drawing ire for this might have drawn attention to other things. Personally, I'd just hold my breath until Trump's gone.

It took two years, from 2016-18 for the US mainstream media to use the word “lie” for the 10,000+ documented falsehoods, misrepresentations, inaccuracies, and other euphemisms. Europe faces Putin from the E, Trump from the W and Bibi from the S, Cerebus, but appeasement never succeeds.

On their website only the French foreign office and the City of Vilnius are mentioned as a sponsor amongst the non-private entities... Sad. Standing up against disinformation is more needed than it ever was before.

No, it doesn’t. Please read the article. Diplomacy and international politics is complicated. They all said, Lithuania and Canada included, the organisers chose to frame some of the discussions in a way which does not align with the official positions held by them.

Sponsors never have a say over the programme and there is no world in which the programme is supposed to represent their official position. Also, they had known the programme for a long time but only pulled sponsorship *after* the US pressured them to, which is confirmed.

"What this amounts to is a purported defender of free speech at the state department using the enormous power of the US government to try to pressure Americans from criticizing their government” said Nina Jankowicz. This is the specific panel the 🇺🇸state department wanted to silence.

The EEAS claims they only just noticed it, but it has been on the conference agenda (of the event they were sponsoring) for months. “The organisers chose to frame some of the discussions in a way which does not align with the official positions held by the EU," an spokesperson told The Guardian.

The paper reports Lithuania was also convinced by 🇺🇸 to drop their sponsorship. The French government was also leaned on, but refused. “There’s absolutely no reason for us to change our commitments” a 🇫🇷source told The Guardian. “We stick to supporting civil society."
