Important update: I have received word from insiders that Crunchyroll executives have deemed the user backlash to be small enough that their subtitle enshittification & OOONA plans will NOT be cancelled, only delayed. I have added an update to the article. There's a summary at the top now too.

Thank you for writing this, utterly engrossing. Time to cancel my Crunchyroll sub which I’ve had going almost constantly since 2010 (was off for a while when they weren’t accepting my debit card and still don’t so I use PayPal)

I have also chosen to license the article under CC BY 4.0. This means that anyone can translate it, adapt it, republish it, do just about anything with it as long as attribution is given. If we want to put a stop to these plans, we need to force a public promise out of Crunchyroll to do better.

daiz.moeCrunchyroll is destroying its subtitles for no good reasonWith the Fall 2025 anime season, Crunchyroll demonstrates zero respect for anime as a medium as the presentation quality of its subtitles reach an all-time low.

Ask yourself this: Do you want this to be the future of your anime watching experience, forever? If your answer is no, then act on it! If you are a journalist or anyone with a platform, talk about this! If you know such people, urge them to do so! Use my article as base! Now, before it's too late!

I'm actually so mad that ONE company will single-handedly ruin subbed anime for EVERYONE in the west. Some of these shows are nigh incomprehensible without proper typesetting. Even if you sail the high seas, you'll only find the enshittified subtitles 99% of the time unless some fansubbers get to it

This is what the subs for the episode looked like on initial release. CR has since updated it with the better original script that the first-party subtitling staff made in the first place in a silent response to the backlash.

That would be Crunchyroll subtitles under the new standards that executives are trying to push the entire site towards.

This is absolutely useless, I've got bootleg evangelion tapes with better subs than this. Between this, the funimation buyout and absorbing rightstuf @crunchyroll.com has done nothing but ravage the english anime industry for their own profit.

I haven't heard anything about you for years since fansubbing started to die out. Very appropriate that the first time I hear about you since then is you letting me know how bad Crunchyroll is screwing the pooch on their subtitles, good to know.

I've been watching anime subbed since the early 90s and I couldn't make out any of that. I thought it was being real-time "translated" by an AI and that's why the subs kept flashing in and out. That's intolerably bad. Oh for the days of Animeigo's high-effort subs being the standard...

Thank you so much! I'll translate to Arabic, publish it on my blog and share it with my followers on Twitter since i got the most arabic-speakers there. Not much demand i see since it also affects the quality of the arabic subtitle.

the situation for the Arabic subtitles just got worse, after asking my followers about to present examples of the subtitles quality. I'm afraid just translate won't help but it need a proper writing to explain this poor quality, which will take time than what i originally thought.

I don't mean to be weird when I say this, but...people actually watch Crunchyroll? Maybe it's just my viewpoint as a person from a country that barely has any streaming services, but I thought most people just pirated anime. That's what I and all of my friends do, at least.

If you pirate anime, you are most likely still watching Crunchyroll, as most pirated anime releases today are just repackaged Crunchyroll rips. In other words, this affects most pirates just as much.

I guess that's true. I don't really watch current anime, though, the anime I'm watching right now are from 1992 and 2000, respectively, both of which are fansubs only. I guess it's a problem if you watch the mainstream stuff.

I looked at my watchlist, and I only saw two anime from this year, one of which was fansubbed because nobody licenced it. That's kinda just what happens when you near-exclusively watch mecha anime, though.

It sucks for sure and I don't aprove of it. I watch dub mainly because reading subtitles is slower for me due to my vision and thus I'd miss too much video. . Dreamworks were one of the first to use the new subtitle format with Disney soon after.

FYI: something odd is happening with your gradient background when I scroll on mobile that wasn't happening before. It's scrolling a bit before "locking", so it starts over on the lower third. This could easily be just on my end! Vivaldi updated recently. But I wanted you to know in case it isn't.

I don't think I've touched the gradient CSS in any meaningful way, so it might indeed be due to a browser update. I'll make a note about it regardless and see if I can find some time to look into it

Hmm, I thought I made those scale proportionally to the image size but guess not. Guess I'll need to do some fixin'

If you are a Crunchyroll subscriber, then you should start by canceling your subscription, as instructed by the "what you can do about it" section. Other than that, you can do your best to spread the word - the only way we can stop this is to make a big enough stink that CR can't afford to ignore it

I wonder if this can be challenged legally in Canada or the states as an accessibility. The CC is required in the USA under title 3 of the ADA which requires wcag 2.0 compliance on web media and specifies pre record subs. In Canada our laws are softer but the crtc DOES govern streaming providers.

boia.orgDoes the ADA Require Captions for Internet Videos?According to the Department of Justice, the ADA requires captions for most types of internet video content. Here’s a closer look at the law.

I bet they hired an AI company to do it. A lot of the online manhwa companies are doing that now, trying to cut out translators entirely to speed up the process and save money…at the cost of quality. :( It’s a real shame.

They didn't, at least not so far. This is just plain human hubris from anime company executives who do not actually care about anime.

Necronomico was not a case of Crunchyroll hiring a company to produce subtitles. The subtitles for it came from the Japanese company (Cygames) that licensed the series for Crunchyroll. Crunchyroll is to blame for putting them up with zero oversight, but they weren't actively paying for AI subs here

Man...this is all a nightmare. I never stopped just using fansubs and their uploads from nyaa, but i know a lot of people these days dont know how to torrent or find quality translation groups. :/ but this shows the major problem with a company lile crunchyroll having such a huge monopoly on anime

The only alternative that's not abysmal dogshit is Hidive but they're such a tiny player and with such limited regional availability that they sadly don't count for much
