I once had a sparkler pop while holding it, which shot white hot burning material onto my arm, causing my first ever second degree burn. Had a scar for a decade or so. Definitely something to be cognizant about.

Hmmm—we 50s kids (elementary aged, not toddlers!) always had sparklers but were supervised. No one got hurt. We learned how to deal with mildly dangerous things (like sparklers), not told to avoid them completely, which was never going to happen. Why not focus on adult supervision tactics?

Maybe if I was a super scientist on the verge of a breakthrough, I might, but only if he had super powers from being bit by a radioactive spider.

Actually, yes. We were... not entirely successful. But my son & I attempted to build a simple fusion reactor as a school science project... (The hard bit isn't the reactor; it's the neutron detector so you can prove fusion has occurred)

It's (probably*) not the sparks you gotta worry about so much, it's that chunks of larger size occasionally detach. * I'd want to do some more empirical testing and less of a thought experiment before I was too authoritative about even the sparks

I learned at 12 that PVC pipe is MUCH safer than steel pipe when my best friend's dad caught us trying to make a pipe bomb in the shed. He was so pissed off that he showed us how to do it safer.

When they talk about GenX being raised on hosewater and neglect, this was the moment those two showed up at the same time. My dad handing me the sparkler with my mom manning the hose.

Welcome to the Republican wussification of American children! Afraid of fire, that we’ve tamed over a million years ago. Afraid of people who don’t look like them. Afraid of their history. Afraid of new ideas. Republicans are pussies.

The down to 2000 degrees would have been in the California initiatives. Having sparklers you couldn't sell in California was not particularly favorable. 3000 degrees would have been the temperature they were dropped to by restrictions of certain chemicals such as phosphorus compounds.

Oh, is THAT's why they call him Mr Fahrenheit? You can't make a supersonic man out of me if you perish in a sparkler mishap (even during pride month).
