In general my compositional techniques don't change a lot, but there's always new sounds to make, new twists on old tricks. When my music sounds messy & chaotic, it's actually constructed from simple sounds & sequences. I always try new ways to complicate them.

Some of my messy isn't generative messy, but actual messy. I can program machine beats, but I'm not great at playing live locked to a beat. So I just listen to the music and play along without worrying about being in the pocket.

I chop samples into small bits without trying to slice it in time. You can sequence that by just trying different notes until you like the result. Also, pitch up/down not just to match the beat, but also to play against the beat, stretching or dragging.

I respect people who can lock to the beat when they play an instrument. But even people who can play tight know when to go rubato against the beat. That sync and drift add flavor.
