What is the differentiation to data attributes?

Lifecycle methods and associated APIs. Whereas data attributes are just places to put strings.

Would requiring hyphenated attribute names be a good requirement though? Like we have for custom elements themselves?

I get that, but on the flip side browser vendors and spec people saying please don't smoosh gate us hasn't historically worked very well...
