1. The thing about science that these jokers don't understand is that science cannot be vibe-coded. Whatever its flaws, the point with vibe coding is that you're trying to quickly make something that sorta works, where you can immediately sorta see if it sorta works and then sorta use it.

“The idea is to put ChatGPT front and center inside software that scientists use to write up their work in much the same way that chatbots are now embedded into popular programming editors. It’s vibe coding, but for science.”

H.G. Wells described the race between education and catastrophe. Isaac Asimov said that self-education was the only kind of education there is. Ben Franklin said, Tell me and I forget Teach me and I remember Involve me and I learn #Science #CitizenScience #ComputationalThinking #Rationalism

I think it still is a derogatory term. It’s just that since they’re thinking-outsourcers, outsourcing their thinking to the very same tool that’s meant to capture their attention and money, they may be a bit slow figuring it out.

Most ML papers I read now are - statement of a generic problem - literature review - a proposed new module or architecture that is basically fucking around with existing operations - demonstration that it slightly outperforms state-of-the-art on standardized datasets that are curated to be easy

Because reviewers at top conferences pretty much only care about novelty and this is a guaranteed way to do it, it encourages this approach and harms the careers of researchers who want to branch out

2. Science is a completely different epistemic enterprise. While I don't want to get into the morass of What Science Is, loosely speaking it involves amassing rigorous evidence in support of claims about the natural world.

And a prediction machine of the most likely output, strictly based on previous publications, sounds like a very, very bad falsification tool.

3. And to do that, you want to *understand* and *justify* every step along the way (at least until you reach one of Latour's Black Boxes) because your end product is a theory, model, or explanation. You can't readily just hit RUN and see if it sorta works.

4. As such, talk doing about vibe science makes no more sense than talk about doing vibe mathematical proofs. As it happens, I get a lot of email from people doing vibe science already. They are convinced that they've discovered the fundamental truths that Darwin and Einstein missed.

5. ChatGPT has bullshitted them into believing that they're the next genius—but unlike previous generations of crackpot letter writers, they don't even pretend to understand their own "discoveries". They simply tell me that ChatGPT has a proof and they need my help getting the word out to the world.

That's a weird and pretty bad example since there were a couple successful vibecoded mathematical proofs in the news recently... The key obviously being that formal(type-theoretical) mathematical proofs are easily verifiable whereas general science is not

It also involves (hopefully) very clear and precise definitions, the sort of thing genAI would be specifically bad at, as words in its training corpus would’ve defined differently than in a given research stream.

Guess that’s only true if you know how to code even a little bit. It’s a lot faster than how slow a project goes for someone who doesn’t know how to code at all. (Personally I’d be too embarrassed to put ‘work’ out into the world that I didn’t know how to make myself, coding or otherwise.)

I don't know why anyone would do that. But then I know enough about coding for my own purposes though not enough to be hired for it. (I did Fortran on punch cards in college in the 70s. I've learned a smattering of other languages since as I've needed to.) I wouldn't trust any AI to write it.

They just don’t get it - they’re trying to replace the part of our job we like the *most*. If they could make an AI tool to vibe-complete travel, reimbursement, and annual reporting paperwork they would make a fucking FORTUNE

Don't get me started. No one seems to be able to reimburse me for my latest web infrastructure expenses because the person who gives permission to give permission to the person who gives me permission doesn't have permission to post to my account on the expense manager platform.

"Trying to quickly make something that sorta works, where you can immediately sorta see if it sorta works and then sorta use it" is in fact a perfect description of how I & many other scientists write code. Very often enough to get a sense of whether you're headed in the right direction w a new idea

Yes! Vibe coding and writing/scientific idea generation are VERY DIFFERENT. Vibe coding is like building a faster!car. We know how to put one together and we can test it. LLMs can do this. Doing science is like art. It’s new thinking. There are often no existing tests. LLMs are terrible at art.

Its worse than that though. Science aims for outcomes that are verifiable and replicable. LLMs outcomes are by design inexplicable a non-replicable (identical inputs result in different outputs). All it ever produces is an illusion of meaning

Move fast and break things works for a tech startup with low risk and unimportant outcomes ("maybe my date will be a bad match") It doesn't work well for things with risk or important outcomes ("hey turns out vaccines actually worked, too late")

This reminds me of the time when my former boss demonstrated his prowess with a chatbox by asking it to write code that searched for a gene within a genome. The box spat out code that did a simple search of four hard-coded characters within a fasta sequence. He proudly claimed that it looked good.

Also... this approach kills creativity and critical thinking according to multiple studies about using chat in learning/writing environments. It's fine for dumb emails that no one wants to read anyway - but not *waves hands* all the really important creative stuff

Honestly, I’m not even sure it’s fine for dumb emails - they may not matter in the grand scheme of things, but it’s often the only time that person will be sitting and thinking about what they need to communicate and how best to do that, it’s still the same skill

I thought maybe you could run LLMs to look for causation and correlations so somebody could track it, you know, for things like astronomy calculations and other things. Not once did I think it should be used to do scientific theory.

Every decade we declare something "new thing anyone can do" and every time we rediscover that output quality tracks input understanding. This is "Excel will replace accountants" for a new generation. The floor rises, the ceiling stays computational.

Something that makes my LaTeX code snap together out of lose curly braces, or that hands me BibTeX keys based on which paper in my .bib smells most like the sentence I just wrote, might be useful. This does not appear to be that thing.

Riiight. I don't really know LaTeX nor do I care too much because ChatGPT works as a better Google for formulas and stuff (I am a very basic LaTeX user). So that's been super useful! But this is silly.

The act of writing is fundamental to science, because the process is what makes people think. You cannot fully evaluate your idea until you are forced to write it down and defend it to yourself, and to the readers in your head. There is no shortcut for that. There is no way to make science easy.

Your being far to generous. There is no point to "vibe-coding". There's no point to anything GPT does. No understanding. No revelations. No connections. No provenance.
