"oh, don't forget to highlight, in bright red, the two-letter word in the tagline! the two letter word that's kind of the whole point of this clever ad campaign! the two letter word that links this show to the horror movie of the same name!" "no problem boss. i'm on it"

(sent in by reader michael mcmaster from australia. are we interpreting this wrong or is this truly a top-tier print mistake? see poster for comparison)

I don't know if this will help, but I've done a lot of marketing work and I don't think it's likely! The reality is that either the person writing the GTM or the person signing the checks will generally turn their nose up at 95% of what would make something "go viral" like this

Like you can imagine someone saying "oh man if we fuck this up people will roast it on TwX and we'll get EVEN MORE EYEBALLS" but a) if it only gets 5 RTs it's huge fucking waste of the value you could get from a *good* bus ad, in like, Los Angeles and b) the boomer who signs your checks hates you

I think 90% of virality conspiracy theories die if you imagine the person who came up with it trying to explain to someone that started their career in the Clinton years why they should bungle their asset budget on purpose, and with major corporations that's kinda what you're up against

Yup, this logic is also secretly at play whenever people think a product has constrained supply “to build up hype.” You mean we’re gonna turn down actual money for some vague potential exposure?

You know my history in print - and by gods I’ve seen some wacky ones in HUGE prints. All. The. Time! It’s not that it’s hard to get right - but that so much is rushed through, nobody spots mistakes!

I have a pic floating around of three signage folk scratching their heads over a 20ft sign half installed that says “YOUR FOURING EXPERTS” because of a last minute change to a sign that said “CITYNAME FLOORING EXPERTS” A change phoned in. Retyped urgently. Autocorrect. Saved. Forced to print in…

… minutes to a printer already set up to print the previous design. Files dropped in, settings copied from the job that was about to start and out came 20ft of vinyl. Laminated, installed on panels - and the *apprentice* noticed the error mid-install.
