“Here’s what we found: Every additional 100kg of vehicle weight was associated with a 6% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality. Every additional 10cm of height was associated with an 11% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality. The relationship was even stronger in lower-speed environments.”

Penalties for violating the traffic laws should be on a sliding scale based on the mass of the vehicle being operated at the time of the violation. The greater the mass, the greater the penalty. IMHO

I've had to default to giving them the right of way, no matter what. So many of them drive like they own the road that I have to really pay attention to defensive driving. That goes for both western and middle US.

Meanwhile I'm spending most of my time dealing with e-moto and e-bike pearl clutching. That's not the carnage. That's not what's killing folks.

That makes huge, heavy city buses with huge blind spots & high grills far more lethal to pedestrians & cyclists than microcars with low grilles during off-peak hours. Especially late at night when bus drivers are tired at the end of their shift. Traffic congestion is not an issue during off-peak.

This is good work. But I do wonder about the contribution the approach to sharing the road by those with a need to drive these vehicles might be. Many of them around here look angry and aggressive (the vehicles too). “RAM” is a dead giveaway!

In fact *nobody* ~needs~ to own an SUV. The (quite small) fraction of car owners who really need to go off-road need proper 4x4 vehicles anyway. Everybody else should be fine using what was considered a “normal” car a few decades ago. Of course including today’s safety features.
