If you want to communicate your idea to an artist all you need is 30 seconds and the basic ability to grip a pen

TONY GRAYSON 🗻@tonycomputerentertainment.com

Anyone who supports this is an embarrassment. "Instead of typing it out they'll generate their idea"? Are you insane? Call yourself whatever you want but you aren't creatives, that's for sure.

Well, this picture made me aware of Demonschool and got me to immediately buy it, so you know... here's proof that non-AI stick figure concept art can lead directly to sales!

That’s the beauty of creation. I’ve worked with a lot of people with zero art skill and zero interest. That said when they pick up a pen and draw a simple pic like that it can really help with ideas. I recently finished a calendar for a friend and he did that with a couple ideas

The notion that an artist can't understand what you want until you give them a perfectly rendered image in full detail...... reveals a profound misunderstanding of creative process.

Let me give a personal example. I had an idea for what I thought would work for the cover of Navigating with You, but I am a terrible artist. So I picked up a pencil and a notebook and sketched my idea out instead of pull the slot machine handle on the plagiarism machine. It turned out amazing.

Hmm... I've got 3 weeks left to the apocalypse, and don't recognize that boss. So I look forward to seeing what horrors it unleashes, and would love to see more stick figure concept art! Really been loving Demonschool so far!

And I'm not sure if this eventually happens or not, since still week 3, but I'd love a feature to replay battles and play around more with party compositions and skills. Even if not, I've still had a lot of fun with the game and love the art and music. (Tuesday Overworld is an amazing track.)

when I needed to learn how to communicate what I wanted from drums to my drummer, I learned how drums work and a bit of the fundamentals. it improved my communication and taught me a lot. doing the extra work is actually a blessing, not a burden, if you care about what you're doing.

You don't even need a pen if both you and the artist have a decent grip on at least one shared language. AI bros are trying to outsource basic communication because they can't grasp it or be asked to ass it

These are such good examples, and really prove the point. Concept sketches don't need to be pretty, that's why you're paying the artist(s); to make it pretty. Concept sketches are utilitarian.

Funny you mention it, when mark cerny recently did an interview on a podcast he was asked how he handled the language barrier working at Sega of Japan and he replied they would just show each other drawings back and forth until he grasped the language.

Or like, fuck, what games can you download right this second, FOR FREE, that lets you make your own levels, maps, characters even, if you don't like drawing? PSO2 NGS, look what I can put inside this big-ass canvas, and everyone's allowed to explore it right now, too! (Ship 4, 719991 019478)

I used to work as a concept designer and/or writer in some creative industries for some years a long time ago, and I might again in the future. My ability in graphics is so close to zero that I struggle making something out even of stick figures, the same goes with music to an extent.

I would never use a dumb bot to try to mediate between an artist and me. I prefer to use words directly to a human, as it is MY FUCKING JOB. Anybody pretending otherwise has an unsolved inferiority complex directed at artists who can make what they can't, where they should only have admiration.

AI generated reference just adds a bunch of visual noise anyway. I prefer the old fashioned moodboard/collection of references with short blurbs saying which bits of which image they want and the vibes they're looking for. Never steered me wrong across a ton of character designs.
