I asked Anne Applebaum on Twitter whether she thought social stigma was really a more pressing concern when it came to censorship than state actors banning books. The response was a block, well within her right, but also the answer to the question at hand.

It's been almost 5 years. I want to see every one of those smarmy dweebs answer that question.

If you could get energy from hypocrisy the Republican Party alone could provide power for the entire planet.

So why don't they? 🤔

I think nearly all of the signers of the Harper's letter would be on the free speech side of this issue as well. There are mostly consistent people. (FWIW, while this shouldn't matter, they were also mostly on the liberal left.)

The 2020 letter said: “The forces of illiberalism are gaining strength throughout the world and have a powerful ally in Donald Trump, who represents a real threat to democracy.” harpers.org/a-letter-on-...

right, and the reactionary character of the letter can be seen in its defense of liberalism at the expense of fragmented and at risk segments of the proletariat.

Isn’t liberalism worth defending?

nah sorry you can't bothsides that one

(my point is those folks were full of shit)

(it didn't come across but i very much agree)
