I had been assuming Bluesky doesn't have DMs just because the platform is still so new, but after reading more deeply into the protocol docs, I'm not sure how it *can* have DMs, at least that we can trust. I think it's a variation of the same "admins can read private posts" problem as ActivityPub?

i don’t mind if it doesn’t have DMs… the whole “admin can read DMs” thing is true for twitter too. sure it’s less of a pain than switching apps but i’m over that particular platform risk

I like that Bluesky doesn't have DMs. It's hard to pull off great UX with end-to-end encryption which in my opinion is a must. They can possibly integrate to systems like Matrix on the client side in the future and offload that responsibility.

Im wondering if some kind of non-custodial multisignature private key setup (tied to email and maybe a passkey for recovery) could allow for an XMTP setup without needing blockchain

this is how i understand it as well. I saw a suggestion on here (which, sorry if it was actually yours?) that DMs could be handled by DIDs for Signal and that seemed extremely good
