You can’t hide from data – and ours is loud and clear. We already have too much incineration capacity in Europe, and we definitely don’t need more ❌ We call on European policy-makers to establish a moratorium on new and expanded capacity; sooner rather than later. Get a closer look: zurl.co/AXVSx

It's the Global Week of Action to Stop Incineration, and to kick it off properly, we've published a study on incineration overcapacity in Europe 🏭🔥 Looking at the latest data from Eurostat, the report shows that Europe has more capacity than it has waste to burn – 65 million tonnes, to be exact 📈

As part of the Global Week of Action to Stop Incineration (13-16 Oct), we will host a webinar w/ activists from Croatia, Nigeria and France. Join us to learn about the risks that incinerators pose to our health and how to organise a community to fight back ✊ 🗓️ 15 Oct 2026 ⌚ 2:00 PM zurl.co/AdDHi

Getting incinerators included in the EU ETS was and is a massive win 💪 But… because, there is always a but... The proposal allows certain types of plants – specifically, combined heat-and-power (roughly 60% of EU incinerators) – to get a carbon cost discount in the first part of the phase-in 💸

What does this actually mean? Operators get an additional decade where the costs for polluting the climate are so low that they have no incentive to invest in more circular solutions. Read our new report on carbon pricing in the EU ETS 🆓 zurl.co/vSbAy

It’s hot, you’re sweating. You go to your fridge for a slice of watermelon 💦🍉 The watermelon is… definitely past its prime. You throw the rest of it into the bin. Food waste is super common in Europe, with over 58M tonnes generated annually. But how we deal with it across the EU varies widely.

Beneath the noise, a quieter momentum is building across Europe 🌊 Our 2025 Annual Report celebrates ambitious action & community-led change. As Esra Tat notes in the foreword, zero waste is now a practical, political, & cultural movement shaping our cities, businesses, and policies. zurl.co/Lhmxy

The results? 🤑 Over a 5-year period, decentralised composting yields a net economic benefit of 193,595 €, a significant saving compared to 2.4M € in costs under the status quo. Even in a scenario with lower participation, costs are still lower than under the current model. 📖 zurl.co/5sLrs [3/3] 🧵

There’s always something left behind when incinerators burn waste – ash, bits of ceramic, microplastics, metals, as well as a plethora of PFAS and POPs, many of them toxic to our health. What could one possibly do with such a hazardous mixture? Surely not allow it to enter the environment? 😬⚠️

Well, you guessed it. Across Europe, bottom ash is turned into a construction aggregate, used for road paving and in cement and concrete blocks. Over time, these substances leach out into the environment, all done to avoid the high disposal costs of safe landfilling. Learn more: zurl.co/C34Dr
