Thread. @amandamarcotte.bsky.social on the House Judiciary Committee Democrats’ report. From Trump’s point of view, all this is stuff he got away with a long time ago; it’s very unfair and partisan for Democrats to bring it up again now. Some political journalists may feel similarly.
Okay, I deleted the original post because people didn't check the link at all and mistook my typo of "young men" seriously. I clearly meant young women. Not sure why this isn't a bigger story, but I read this entire report today. It's gutting. democrats-judiciary.house.gov/media-center...

I wouldn’t fault Catholic bishops for going to the White House to plead for abused (and most often Catholic) migrants, if this is what they did. Knowing the kind of people there now, they should have been ready to get their own message out right after the event. [Via @jackjenkins.me]
My deepest sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Walter Koenig, a pillar of science fiction’s golden age in film and on television.
My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.
A fine remembrance of Walter Koenig from @straczynski.bsky.social, a master storyteller who directed him on Babylon 5 in the 1990s. Koenig had played a beloved but minor character on Star Trek, used as often for comic relief as anything. His Alfred Bester was complex, self-aware & deeply sinister.

Thread. Republican threats to election integrity are overt. They’re made because Republican voters do not resent them, accepting uncritically allegations of voter fraud that have been made in plain bad faith since before Trump entered national politics. By @swin24.bsky.social
It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising

I’m going to take a wild guess that by “warmongers” who should “burn in hell,” Elon Musk is not referring to Vladimir Putin, who started the war with Ukraine and has rejected every idea to end or even pause it, while sending hundreds of thousands of Russians to their deaths.
Elon Musk acknowledged that SpaceX changed how Ukraine's military can use Starlink and followed it with a stark warning about the war.

This is worth thinking about. Not everyone can be an AI expert. But everyone shouldn’t have to be. Decisions about what AI should do — and what it must not do — should be made democratically, not just by tech people with private financial interests to protect, argues @brianbeutler.bsky.social

The most charitable and perhaps most likely explanation of this bizarre announcement is that Trump and Rubio are trying to get Cuban-Americans in Florida motivated to vote for otherwise unimpressive Republican candidates this fall.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio publicly invited Cubans to work with the CIA on Friday, and the reaction across the political spectrum was immediate.

Heat storms, massive heat waves covering at least 1% of the globe for five consecutive days, have become increasingly frequent and severe. These storms were rare in the 1960s, but now average 102 events per year, causing widespread heat-related deaths, wildfires, and droughts.

The answer to @mcfaulmike.bsky.social’s question is rather obvious. That doesn’t mean the question is not a good one. Trump’s fantasy is that he is a master dealmaker. Rubio’s fantasy is that he has political standing independent of his relationship with Trump. The former trumps the latter. 🧵
I'm puzzled by Marco Rubio's role as Secretary of State. Why are Witkoff and Kushner taking the lead on major negotiations over war and peace, rather than America's chief diplomat?
