Looks like the big election yesterday went spectacularly against Reform, which is exactly what we would expect an hope for give the majority of the country literally want anyone but them. Still not great to see some 35% of voters actually voting for that trainwreck of a party.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the upheaval in the upper echelons of the Labour Party, as Starmer and his team have done very little to impress me over the last 2 years.

Apparently the world might get its first trillionnaire today. That means that if he spent $1 million a day and got no return on his wealth, he wouldn't run out of money until 4763. How on earth does it make sense for someone to have that much wealth when there are people struggling to find food?

US government criticises UK police for 2 tier policing? Would genuinely like them to consider how many of their own citizens have been killed by their police in recent years before they judge anyone else. We're not perfect, but they're far worse.

Maybe Labour need a period of introspection to work out why they have had such a shocking set of local elections results (so far), or maybe they need to stop trying to appease Reform voters and stay moving back to the traditional left wing where their traditional core is.

More progressiveness, less small c conservatism. I honestly can't see why so many die hard traditional Labour voters aren't shouting at them to actually do something left wing that will make a meaningful change to our lives. Instead they're leaving in droves, it seems.

If they carry on losing this level of support, it's a near guarantee that they'll be a 1 term government, which is shocking given the majority they generated in the general election. With the caveat that local and general elections are of course different and that there's still a long time to go.

Genuinely insane that Starmer gets to impose a 3 line whip on Labour MPs to force them to vote against a motion that would see him referred to the Standards Committee to investigate whether he acted improperly regarding what he told the House about Mandleson. Our system has problems...

A bit of advice to #Reform politicians - if you are not invited to speak at a student event, take it on the chin like a grown up and move on with your life. Don't threaten the university, because that makes you look like a bunch of petulant children rather than supposedly serious statespeople.

Bitcoin was trading at $126k in October and now trades at less than $64k. Which price is closer to the correct fair value, and why? My view: there's no intrinsic value to bitcoin, so the fair value is actually closer to $0 than anything, so my view is that today's price is closer to correct.

www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j... Does Trump seriously think that dealing with China is more dangerous than dealing with the US at the moment? As far as I'm aware, China hasn't recently threatened us with tariffs just for stating that we respect our allies' sovereignty.

theguardian.comTrump says ‘very dangerous’ for UK to do business with China, after Starmer hails progress in BeijingUS president warns Keir Starmer over closer ties with China during British PM’s trip to secure lower tariffs and better access to Chinese market

Trump is suing the BBC for defamation. Defamation requires a demonstrable harm to one's reputation. What harm could anyone do to Trump's reputation that he hasn't done to himself? Complete non-starter, even before you consider the lack of jurisdiction that Florida has over the UK broadcaster.

So the edited speech from Trump sounds really bad for the BBC at first glance until you realise that the bits edited together were from the same speech and that Trump actually said both parts, just not together. At worst, BBC is guilty of misrepresenting the exact timings of his speech.

Sickening that 96 elected MPs voted yesterday to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights. Every single one of them should either resign or be voted out, because people shouldn't forget someone voting to essentially make them non-human.

There's a lot of people referring to the government's announced and proposed tax changes as either communism or socialism, which leads me to conclude that there are a lot of people in the country who don't know what communism or socialism are.

Is this what politics has come to? Seeming Labour supporters criticising Ed Davey not for his policies or his antics but because his name can be said as "Little Davey"? If that's the best you've got, you've got nothing substantial, and shouldn't ever vote on any issues that are actually substantial

So, ID cards. I can understand why some people would be opposed to them on the grounds of data security, but the biggest uproar I've seen seems to suggest that people are worried the government is going to spy on them. What are they doing that's so interesting, and how can I get involved?

Right wingers, can you please clarify what freedom of speech actually means? Because if it doesn't apply to lies and the government can step in over mistruths,I have some really bad news for you regarding some of the claims made by your heroes.

Time for comedians all around the world to really double down on calling out trump for his attacks on free speech and free press. This latest is a further descent into the realm of absolute tyranny, and it absolutely breaks what the US was supposed to stand for.

Signed - can't imagine it will actually change the minds of the Labour leadership, but at least it'll be another bit of evidence that they are ignoring the wishes of their party membership and the country as a whole for their own foolish reasons.

I wrote this post on LinkedIn regarding something the Chancellor said in passing during her Mansion House speech earlier today. It might sound like a minor issue, but 6.7% average return and 9% average return are very different, and finance professionals wouldn't be allowed to get away with it

If the original Magna Carta was kept in another country because at some point we got invaded and the original was sold to a collector as a curiosity, I imagine we would be quite keen to get them back. The Parthenon Marbles are more than twice as old. That's why they matter to Greece.

Apparently staying that I think there is wealth inequality and that steps ought to be taken to try to improve that inequality make me a communist, a Marxist and a dickhead. Sadly that's all from LinkedIn, not Twitter.

Just seen someone on LinkedIn lamenting the fact that higher earners have to pay more tax and basically saying that anyone earning less than about £70k should just be grateful to all the wealthy people supporting them. Also implied that criticising them should be allowed.

Then a few really horrible supporters came out and essentially argued that votes should only be allowed for people paying at least £20k in tax. For reference, that would exclude every basic rate taxpayer. This is sadly what some of the wealthy believe. Not all. by a long shot, but influential.

"PIP should be means tested" Heard this today. Utter nonsense. The whole point of PIP is to provide support to those with disabilities that impact their day to day lives. It helps to cover therapy, carers, rehab, mobility aids, etc.

It's also worth remembering that for someone like me, PIP payments partially overcome the job I can no longer do - over the last 6 years the illness has cost me £100,000s, and I've got back about £6k a year via PIP. I am far worse off now than I would have been without the illness.

Finally, before illness I was paying income tax and NI totalling around £20,000 a year. I'd been doing that for many years, and the social contract in place was that if something horrible happened to me, there would be a financial safety net. The plans to remove this are reneging on that contract.

You got 34% of the vote, Starmer. Given how bad the last Tory government was and the interference offered by Reform, that doesn't make you some sort of political genius. If anything you should have done much better given the circumstances, but you only got 34% of the vote.

New analysis of the 2025 local election results: This year we saw the lowest ever average winner’s share of the vote at 40.7%, including 75 candidates who were elected with less than 30% of the vote. The system isn't working. It's time for Proportional Representation.

Today I took my son swimming, and realised with horror when I was about chest deep that my phone was still in my pocket. Needless to say, the phone was soaked and is now having a few intermittent stability issues (much like me in some ways) Still mostly working though, which is surprising.

Line up all the good Labour have done, and it doesn't even begin to net off against the bad. Some of the stuff on this list is unforgivable, period.

By betraying his voters so comprehensively and so soon, Keir Starmer has done us a favour. He has given us 4 years to design the government we want. In this week's column I explain how it can be done. There's massive potential, but we need to start now. 🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
