Welcome to the 39th annual Vancouver Writers Fest! πŸ“šπŸŽ‰ From October 18–25, join us on Granville Island and across Vancouver to gather with literary community; exchange ideas and dialogue; and discover the latest works from 150+ local and international authors. 🎟️ Tickets at writersfest.bc.ca

A small sample of Oct 23 at #VWF2026: Douglas Stuart and Damian Barr filled St. Andrew’s-Wesley with Scottish wit, in conversation with Bill Richardson. Also pictured: the eager audience! Rollie Pemberton made us think differently about music, in his riveting conversation with Elamin Abdelmahmoud.

Ece Temelkuran joined us virtually, after her Canadian visa was delayed, in a powerful conversation with BCOHRC Commissioner Kasari Govender. Canadian women’s hockey legends Cassie Campbell-Pascall and Jennifer Botterill delighted a crowd of fans at their event, moderated by Karin Larsen.

A mere slice of daytime magic on Oct 22 at #VWF2026: Rachael King, Emilie Christie Burack & Erin Bow at their panel event with France Perras. Moderator Rachel Sargeant, Aaron Cully Drake, Ahmad Saber, and Tanya Boteju shared a stage selfie from their YA event. (Photo: Rachel Sargeant)

Our crew of staff and volunteers welcomed the final school groups of #VWF2026 to Granville Island! So the Story Goes with Dina Del Bucchia, Chanel Sutherland, Amal El-Mohtar & moderator Corinna Chong. This year’s posters (artwork by Gina Ortiz, creative direction by ZAK) fill up with signatures.

It is always a joy to celebrate the opening of the Festival with our authors, friends, and partners in one room. Thank you to our opening reception sponsors, and to Amanda Nahanee for offering a traditional welcome to the land. ❀️ πŸ“Έ Photos: Helen He

Audience members worked on writing exercises at UBC Night Class, presented w/ UBC School of Creative Writing. Leilani Farha, this year’s Massy Lecturer, addressed the audience before speaking w/ Jackie Wong. Eleanor Wachtel returned to our stage to interview award-winning author Valeria Luiselli.

A note about event 51: this is a hybrid style event, with Ece Temelkuran appearing virtually on screen in conversation with BC’s Human Rights Commissioner, Kasari Govender, who will appear in-person.

Part 1 of some of the dazzling highlights from Oct 21 at #VWF2026! Jackie Morris displayed a gorgeous piece, painted with a raven feather live at her event. Coltrane Seesequasis, Elle Tesch, and Rachael King signed books after their event w/ moderator France Perras. (πŸ“Έ Photo by Amber Charlotte)

The first full day of #VWF2026 on October 20 brought acclaimed authors to our stages from around the world. We ended the night with a soothing bedtime story from the Bedtime Story Hotline. Ready for the remaining week of literary discovery and brilliance!

Our friendly raffle volunteers are selling tickets all week, so say hello and purchase a ticket to support free and subsidized access to youth events with inspiring authors.

✏️ A note about youth events: these are curated for school groups, and open to all! If you're a parent bringing a child, or an adult interested in reading/writing books for youth, you're always welcome in our audience.

Event 26. Andrew Sean Greer has unfortunately been cancelled, as Andrew Sean Greer is no longer able to join us due to a personal family matter. We wish him well and hope he can join us again in the future.

Tanya Boteju (Lake Life), Ahmad Saber (Ramin Abbas Has MAJOR Questions), and Aaron Cully Drake (When the World Was Twice as Big) discuss how they depict complicated relationships with nuance, in conversation with moderator Rachel Sargeant. P.S. Zoom in to see the mini chocolates of their books. πŸ‘€

Ece Temelkuran, who was scheduled to appear tonight at event 01. Grand Openings: Read, Resist, Repair, Rejoice, can no longer join us due to a delay from Canadian authorities in issuing her visa. The dissident Turkish author shared this powerful and poignant statement about her absence.

Sold out! πŸ’₯ Patrick deWitt joins us with Dodge City at event 10. Patrick deWitt in Conversation, organized in collaboration with the Canada Council for the Arts. The finalists for the 2026 #GGBooks Awards will be announced on October 28; winners will be announced on November 12.

You may recall that deWitt won the Governor General’s Literary Award for fiction in 2011, for The Sisters Brothers. We are excited to welcome him back to the Vancouver Writers Fest, and grateful to the Canada Council for their collaboration and support!
