This man's own aunt, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, purchased translation rights to 14 works by Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz after his Nobel Prize in 1988, personally editing his legendary Cairo trilogy with pen and paper. Her notes are preserved at Indiana University archives.iu.edu/catalog/InU-...

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't listen to Lil Nas X on Spotify. The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't binge-watch Squid Game on Netflix. The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't start podcasts about deepfakes. The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't track their steps on their Fitbits.

Wonderful day driving down to Columbus for a special event at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum: a "live drawing event" with the great Chris Ware. For three hours Ware sat at a drafting table inking a work-in-progress and took audience questions, told stories etc. Great shit, truly.

Some images from the "Life is Complicated" exhibition featuring the work of Chris Ware. There have already been a few European stops; Columbus, Ohio, has the only museum in America that will be showing this exhibition.

Do you want a serious argument for the Guardians winning the World Series this year? Let's try this for size. In 2025 the Guardians won the AL Central with a record of 88–74. In that moment, they were the 27th best offense in MLB. 643 runs scored. Only the Rockies and the Pirates were worse.

The Guardians won that game because they stopped swinging at every bullshit pitch below the knees. I think they had a meeting about it, they talked about it. Their strike zone discipline was much better and if they can keep it up, they'll be fine.

It may be hard for people who don't follow the Guardians to understand that the José Ramírez who has been so productive for the last week..... .....has been almost entirely AWOL since coming back from his IL stint on July 23. We've been waiting a couple of months for this guy!

Jake Bauers is the HR leader on MLB's winningest team. Seems like kind of an unexpected person for that role. I decided to check who that player was for all seasons since 1990. Bauers doesn't stand out *quite* as much as I had expected; it's a mix of all-time greats and ... other people.

A couple of times 2 teams tied for MLB wins leader. In that situation I took whatever hitter had the most HRs, i.e. it was not required that both teams get an entrant on the list.

Don't look now, but the highest-scoring team in the 2026 playoffs, on a runs/game basis, is the Cleveland Guardians. Cleveland: 5.25 r/g Yankees: 4.60 r/g White Sox: 4.50 r/g Padres: 3,67 r/g Dodgers: 3.50 r/g etc.

In my mailbox, a $500 bribe from Donald Trump's US Treasury Dept. as a "refund" because of supposed overcharging by Joe Biden relating to HealthCare-gov. I'm tempted not to cash it. I do not like being bribed.

Really tired of "Can anyone beat the Dodgers??????????" takes in any form. They came very close to losing last year. They've played 2 postseason games and won one of them by 2 runs and lost the other one by 1 run. They did not lead MLB in wins. Does anything about this suggest invincibility?
