The word “woke”is often traced back to blues singer Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter) in his 1938 song "Scottsboro Boys" the Scottsboro case of falsely accused young Black men, Lead Belly advises, "I advise everybody, be a little careful when they go down there. Best stay woke, keep their eyes open".
