Letโ€™s make it fairer, going to the Konflikt โ€˜47 site, another alternative World War wargame (WW2 this time but thematically close enough) I get, on the homepage, a blurb about the setting and blurbs for all the factions. Right there with minimal scrolling or clicking.

I want to like Trench Crusade, I really do! But Iโ€™ve read a brief sentence in the paragraph about the British Commonwealth faction of Konflikt โ€˜47 relying on automated infantry (on - it must be stressed - the homepage!) and now find myself considering buying a platoon of them. See the problem here?

At this point, Iโ€™m ready to give up. Itโ€™s not that Iโ€™m averse to reading lots of lore (I actually love it) or using my brain to figure stuff out, the problem is, there has to be a few basic things for it to latch on to, some brief, establishing statements. Vibes alone doesnโ€™t let me figure it out.

Iโ€™m not trying to be pedantic or unfair here. Iโ€™m looking at this as trying to be convinced to buy in to a product. For comparison, the new edition of Warmachine site at least has a bit called โ€œExplore armiesโ€, where I can read a brief passage about an army and see what they look like.

Things are becoming a bit clearer! Thereโ€™s mention of places like Jerusalem, events like a gate to Hell opening, and even some biblically familiar personalities like Beelzebub. Whatโ€™s missing is whatโ€™s where, Iโ€™ve still no clue about the *countries* involved, Iโ€™ve no map to help visualise this!

Going back to the rest of the articles I can see some very evocative wording and imagery. But again, Iโ€™ve no context for any of it. I can pick out words like Papal States and Heretics and so on but I still canโ€™t form an idea of the forces or even where theyโ€™re fighting (besides in trenches, obvs!).

I give up, off the the PDFs I go! Letโ€™s see if I can find some answers there. Ah, a good old timeline. Staple of every fictional setting, and just as dry to read as any in a history book regardless of the amount of proper nouns thrown in for good measure.

Iโ€™m not opening the PDFs yet, I just spotted something in the burger button called โ€œThe Worldโ€, maybe this is what I want! Well, hereโ€™s all the lore! Literally, thereโ€™s loads of it. All grouped into Lore Books and numbered. Letโ€™s start with Book 1: World in Flames.

Ok, so broken up into articles. The first is The Pillar of Jonah. Still nothing jumping out at me about whatโ€™s going on and whoโ€™s who but alright, letโ€™s read it. Oof, who let the nouns out? So while this is the first lore entry it seems more a snapshot of something that I still have no context for.

It also mentions that itโ€™s a โ€œWW1 that never wasโ€. Right, so the assumption is the forces are the same? Because I still donโ€™t know. But wait, thereโ€™s some links on the Welcome page to the free (always good) rulebook and a warband book.

Ok, so at this point I could download the PDFs and have a read but this is starting to feel like a bit of work. Iโ€™m trying to look at this as someone coming in cold to it all, and I know websites arenโ€™t what they were 10-15 years ago but this info should be being pushed into my face from the start.

Like, it opens with a few paragraphs explaining the premise. Ok, sounds good. Then we get a link to a welcome section that briefly explains the gameplay and core mechanic at the heart of it. At this point I still do not know who exactly the factions are besides โ€œfaithfulโ€ and โ€œfallenโ€.

I know Iโ€™m around 15+ years too late to the discussion here but they absolutely nailed the casting of Sergeant Angua in Skyโ€™s adaptation of Going Postal. Like 10/10, no notes.

Gave the first episode of VisionQuest a go. Nearly turned it off immediately when presented with โ€œEdinburghโ€ consisting entirely of an American bar thinly distinguished as a pub in the middle of nowhere. Persisted only to be even more annoyed when London is introduced with a glamorous panoramic shot

Everyone seems to be raving about Bettany but I feel like heโ€™s just going through the motions for that paycheque. Spader seems to be the only one having fun and doing a lot of heavy lifting because of it.

I always underestimate just how water-repellent my rain jacket is right up until I realise itโ€™s shed all the rain thatโ€™s hit it directly down the front of my trousers, soddening them.

When Iโ€™m cycling on the road, I really appreciate it when people take the time to slow down dangerously close alongside me, lower their window, and scream โ€œGet on the path, you fucking tit!โ€ at me.

If this was shown in an episode of Black Mirror people would have been complaining it was too on the nose.

What really hits with this is BioWare was a studio known for its stories and the wide diversity of characters that made up those stories, and the impact they had on everyone who played those games. It feels up there with burning books.

Browsing the job market at the moment and the way a majority of companies donโ€™t post salaries but expect you to spend several hours fine-tuning a CV and a personal statement, complete a bunch of judgement tests and answer numerous redundant questions is fucking criminal.
