Almost everything: Cars, computers, television, cameras, phones, medicine, food, kitchens, clothing, telecommunications, music delivery, package delivery, shopping, batteries, tools, shoes… all better. Only toilets and the President are worse, and I’m not so sure about toilets.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Oh Steve, we can only hope!

Brian Tyler Cohen@briantylercohen.bsky.social

Steve Bannon issues warning to voters if they vote for Democrats in the midterms: “I think you’ll see Bobby Kennedy impeached, I’ll think you see Pete Hegseth impeached. I think you’ll see subpoenas flying every day. They will look to destroy Trump, and we’ll be bogged down for two years.”

We all know it’s only a matter of time until he thinks of staging the execution in the ballroom…

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: Did you personally authorize or approve the livestreamed execution? TRUMP: Did I approve? Absolutely I did

Deportation requires two steps: (1) Grab people and put them in camps, and (2) Move people from the camps to their final destination. I am horribly certain that it has occurred to people in this administration that deportation would be a lot easier if they could eliminate that second step.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

Whoa. @haleaziz.bsky.social has the scoop on a truly insane plan to use some military training ships for deportations, with people presumably shackled or locked in cells for days at a time as they transit to Central and South America. Each journey would be staggeringly expensive — and dangerous.

To be fair, this is also an accurate description of how Apprentice episodes were made, with editors and producers trying to fix his performance in the edit…

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

I recommend people read this to get a sense of the president's grave cognitive impairment. Trump is either unwilling or unable (or maybe both) to answer the questions he's actually asked, so he just rants and raves while the interviewers do their best to provide structure to his random brain firings

Bummer. I just noticed the 18th Space Defense Squadron has issued 60-day warning notices for the Swift Observatory space telescope. Re-entry predicted for November 3rd. It’s back in full detection mode. Going down swinging…er, slewing.

With all due respect, while agreeing that our president is deeply stupid, your country’s boycott did this. Trump didn’t make you do a boycott. You did that to retaliate and gain leverage by subjecting us to economic pain. This is exactly what that looks like.

Max Fawcett@maxfawcett.bsky.social

It's your stupid president's constant threats to our sovereignty and attacks on our country that did this, not our decision to respond to them. www.latimes.com/business/sto...

Attention DC Statehood advocates! This is your chance! Act now! Agree to name the new state “Trump.” You’ll get the President, and he can pressure the Senate. All you’ll need is the House. Sure, your state will have an odious name, but it will still be a real state, with Senators and everything!

Decades from now, scientists will still be adding a line or two to the methodology section of their research papers to explain how their longitudinal studies accounted for the “mid-2020s data gap”…

Ian Kremer@wolverinebear.bsky.social

Americans may not get results of Alzheimer’s study due to Trump cuts: Shutdown of study is latest for Trump administration, which has canceled, frozen and otherwise disrupted more than 5,700 medical research grants over two years www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026... #Project2025 #science #Blues

BTW, because the news reports did not make it obvious: Most of the incidents where AI got away and hacked something were the results of tests to see what the AI would do if a lot of the safety controls were removed. They were trying to push the AI to see what it would do.

It used to be the Iranians wouldn't do stuff like this out of fear they'd get bombed. But we've shown them they can live with getting bombed. Now the only way we can regain the initiative...is troops on the ground. Which would be terrible.

Carl Quintanilla@carlquintanilla.bsky.social

“.. With Saudi oil now blockaded, Americans are about to discover why maintaining stability in the Middle East and not handing it to a consortium of Russia and Iran was always important.” @jayinkyiv.bsky.social

Fact check: True! Technically if we “decimated” their missile stock it means we only got one in ten of them!

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

INGRAHAM: How is Iran getting missiles off if we decimated them? TRUMP: They can always get off missiles. They had plenty.

Trump is infamous for not paying what he owes. I think “Trump will pay you” should become slang for unkept promises: “You joined the health club again?” “But this time they say it will be easy to cancel if I don’t like it.” “Yeah, right. And Trump will pay you!”

John Carpenter’s Halloran@profhalloran.bsky.social

The credulity with which the $5,000 Trump Dividend is being reported is abhorrent. Lots of folks should feel the shame that they’re clearly not feeling.

I miss the old days when phrases like “effective altruism” just meant choosing charities with low overheads and high (and ideally measurable) program benefits.

Timnit Gebru@timnitgebru.blacksky.app

Lol watch his 2017 effective altruist conference speech. This is the main influencer of the pro labor left lawmaker that is Bernie Sanders.

I’ve got to say, maybe Trump *can* destroy Iran. He’s real good at destroying things—casinos, football leagues, White House wings, the conservative Republican Party, government agencies—and in a perverse way, it’s kind of nice to see him using that power against some other country for a change.

canada: "fuck you, americans!" americans: "yeah, that's fair, fuck us up"

John Michael McGrath@jm-mcgrath.bsky.social

This might be the funnier YouGov poll: Canada's retaliatory tariffs are above water with US adults:

The great thing about Meta's $18 billion settlement is that all the children harmed by its products will be using the money to rebuild their lives. Because that is who the money is going to, right? The children? This wasn't just the AGs using children as an excuse to fund state projects, right?

I used to play Eve Online. This is so on-brand. Eve could be rewarding, but a lot of the players were straight-up sociopaths. I'm pretty sure the foundation will never see a dime of this.

When they say “secretly transition students” do they mean using the students’ preferred names and pronouns and not freaking about how they’re dressed?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Linda McMahon: "After the Biden administration allowed schools to secretly transition students without parents' knowledge, President Trump is defending parental rights like never before"

Dammit. As soon as I saw the name, I thought "I'll bet Pete Hegseth wants to rename it after a white guy."

Carl Quintanilla@carlquintanilla.bsky.social

(CNN) - The US Navy is working to rename an aircraft carrier under construction that was set to honor a Black sailor hailed for his heroic actions during .. Pearl Harbor .. .. there have been internal conversation about renaming it to honor Trump.” @halbritz.bsky.social www.cnn.com/2026/08/20/p...

This angers me because there is, of course, a whole academic discipline under Computer Science called Artificial Intelligence. It has theory and method and is a legitimate science. But that’s probably not what these university administrators have in mind.

Tressie McMillan Cottom@tressiemcphd.bsky.social

there is no rhyme or reason to an entire “AI” department, much less an AI school. There is no curriculum, as such, because AI is not a school of thought. It has no theory, no method. It’s just a tool. Two or three courses, max, if someone is obsessed with it should suffice.

My hot take: The Fourth Amendment says nothing about crossing borders. Border officers shouldn’t be allowed to search your phone or anything else of yours without your permission unless they have probable cause for a warrant. Same as everywhere else.

Adam Serwer@adamserwer.bsky.social

Wrote about the border search exception: a massive loophole in the Fourth Amendment that allows border officials to search through your phone without a warrant, the exception provides an easy pretext for the Trump administration to target its political enemies. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

A classic mistake. “They’re not doing what we want. So we’re going to hurt them real bad. And we will keep on hurting them, until they do what we want.” But what if they *never* do what we want? Congratulations, you have just lost the initiative.
