“Sin, young man, is when you treat people like things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is.” ― Terry Pratchett, Carpe Jugulum No religion ever made it this clear. Families could stay together, and wars might even be averted if they did. But religions would go out of business. #Discworld

Since its foundation in 1824 the bravery of Royal National Lifeboat Institution volunteers has saved more than 146,700 lives at sea. Hundreds of those volunteers have died attempting to save others. They are the best of us.

The produce section of major grocery stores don't smell like produce. The fruits and vegetables are too uniform in color, shape, and size to look like something that was alive recently. That's so they can be stacked in neat rows or geometric heaps. Reality becomes AI slop for maximum profit.

In "The Wee Free Men," a parasitic world exists. It's the land of the Elves, which attaches to a more solid one while the Elves terrorize people. Tiffany Aching, a young witch, notices that things look fuzzy if no one is paying attention to them. AI works the same way. #TerryPratchett #Discworld

I haven't known Dolly Parton personally. Or Terry Pratchett or Bob Ross. Just like I don't know Keanu Reeves personally. Or Ms. Rachel. It's really not that hard to be decent and caring. It takes trust in others, and the expectation that people like to help you become the best version of you.

I'm feeling really silly right now. In "Monstrous Regiment" by Terry Pratchett, the officer hopes to cement his legacy by having an item of clothing named after him. His name is Lt Blouse. His regiment is all women disguised as men. A blouse is women's clothing. I read this before. I just got it.

As I reread Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett, it occurs to me that most women cosplay "Woman" on terms set by men all their lives. They decided to cosplay "Man" on men's terms, and it worked because manliness and femininity are acts. Only another soldier born female saw through it.

#Unshelfie This book was worth losing the only bookshelf I had. My dying grandmother gave it to me. My parents heard that and demanded it. A date invited me home to keep discussing #TheScienceofDiscworld They have matching bookshelves. I have someone who values me and books more than furniture.

Trump's asinine UFC event does have some Fall of the Roman Empire vibes to it. While paying more for everything in your life, all you get from Trump is taxpayer-funded arches, ballrooms, cage match fights, felon-to-felon slush funds, and more tax breaks for billionaires. Remember in November.

Now I understand why my father didn't send me card on my birthdays. It was more than the idea that parental support is a transaction. A leader doesn't celebrate his supporters; they celebrate him. He became a father to gain authority. When he couldn't exert authority over me, he lost interest.

Agnes Nutter from Good Omens is Cassandra if she was born as a commoner. She was unimportant enough to fly under the radar, which gave her enough time to figure out how to get her prophecies to the right people.

So, in Discworld there's a character whose name is Reacher Gilt, who is, naturally, a villain. He's fake gold plating on a pirate's mind, complete with a parroting flunky. He's there to steal as much as possible and then leave the city leaders holding the empty bag. Why am I telling you? No reason

And this here is at the root of all evil. Not viewing other people as real humans just like yourself. Whether you call them animals, savages, or NPCs, you can do what you like to them because they're unhumans.

Calling it "boots on the ground" minimizes the humanity. It is sending American people to war Talking about only the dead minimizes the hundreds of injured, mangled in body perhaps forever, and the mental trauma of thousands

I'm so glad Mr. Rogers didn't live to see this day #RIP

Robert Reich@rbreich.bsky.social

I'm reminded of these wise words from Mr. Fred Rogers on what would have been his 98th birthday. We are all in this together. Let's renew ourselves to the fight for the common good. It's all the more important during these difficult times.
