Hello. I reviewed the new compilation from Habibi Funk surveying Lebanon's '70s and '80s private-press tape scene. It raises some interesting questions about genre signifiers. Can something from Beirut be called "city pop" just because it's got similar influences?

the densest opening he's ever written (OH BOY THE FONTS) - his late style's almost back to Early Vollmann levels of black-comedic dramatic-ironic time-leaping brashness but w/ all the digressions whittled Acidically Sharpβ¦ he REALLY did trim this 3000-page novel as lean as he could + i'm terrified π
brought to you by my hi-hat moving like 2 inches back over the course of this video lol (also i should not be propping my bass drum against the radiator)
for some reason my brain's starter motor has always answered "can you PLEASE think of a comic idea it can be anything" with "anime girls at a building site" for years now... well, i did it
i felt like humiliating myself online w/ how many books i physically own and have not even started, so i made a fancy web-catalog for them all ^u^ stay tuned as this list grows [no closer to completion]!!!

if more people knew (as i had not until i saw it!) that this is one of the most incredible encyclopedic projects ever undertaken by one person, i would NOT have been able to easily afford the entire set in dublin this weekend lol
and SO many delicious digressions hiding everywhere (i caught one on early arabic celestial globes somewhere) - at its most sprawling this thing is a 20th-century Anatomy of Melancholy
tho if i post any otherwise-forgotten extract, it should be the preface to the final instalment from 1947 (he gave up on finishing the series after this)... surely one of the most sobering things a historian and/or scientist has ever had to write - i think about it a lot :(

what i love most is how ungodly rigorous AND messy it is, as only a totally unchecked academic labor of love can be... the 1st vol. covers a century every ~40 pages + by the end he's taking TWO THOUSAND pages to cover every nook and cranny of the 1300s
first uk edition copy of The Act of Creation i just got on kennys for 5 quid MAY have been owned by ireland's most famous nature writer en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael... (rip π«‘)
found the guy who designed all the canonised astrological symbols for new dwarf planets (+ moons, constellations, meteor showers, etc). one of my new favourite guys suberic.net/~dmm/
