Been playing Beyond Good & Evil again, another old game I never beat The game has such a nice ambiance The UI is so cozy too, definitely taking notes there

Also I tried the remaster before starting, and the remaster sorta butchers the look of the game imo. Bloom too strong, Jade is like 4 skin tones lighter than she was for some reason? clearly machine upscaled textures... Just a lot of small things.

*(note: there's nothing wrong with this badge btw) but i don't even want to acknowledge Ai. When someone says they "Got to the top of Mt. Everest" it usually means a lot of effort/teamwork was involved, and its impressive. 1/2

You might have seen the original "no genAI seal" by @kanaratron.bsky.social. I've made the icon into a set of assets in both PNG and vector formats that can be more widely used in different contexts. You can find them here: www.joramwolters.com/no-gen-ai-ico/

Ai is the chairlift/elevator to the top. And it makes all future climbers of the mountain now have to use an asterisk. I don't want to have to use a fucking asterisk. The Ai disclaimer at the bottom is enough for me to avoid a game.

When you see devs posting their games you need to also share some of them posts. The industry is not good but some are still working and making but they need an audience and they only get that if you help share them games. Discovery is harder but you can help by simply pointing to interesting games.

For those of you reading who have tried vibe code, or used claude code snippets even, etc; Its okay to just stop if you feel its wrong now, you dont have to double down. We aren't going to witch hunt. We just want a healthier industry continued to be made by Human beings.

I promise you learning to code is very rewarding its the coolest thing I taught myself how to do over the last 9 years now My first job out of college was at an Marketing Agency, doing 3D webGL stuff Thats how i got my toes wet

This whole Ai thing hit at such a bad time. In 2017 I learned javascript as my first language, and ive been learning since. I would not know C++ & be comfortable with it if I used Ai coding tools. You just legit stop learning. It stops becoming fun.

I cant name names, but I know people who have. And instead of going "ya know, its making me dumb, im gonna stop" They double down, they become accelerationists. It's okay to admit we tried it, and now its time to reflect.

To my buddies launching their demos this NextFest: Do not be bummed out by the numbers. They might be low, but its not a indicator of your game. The amount of games that are in the Fest now are 4x what they were last year. And it'll continue to grow (thanks to slop) That's my psa!

Touchy subject: I am old enough to remember when studios using Outsourcing was frowned upon because it was taking jobs away from locals. (Games & Animation) Also how invisible those people are in the released game. It's way too normalized now. Both sides of the 'issue' having valid points and stuff

People that would have otherwise been on the credits because so much of that game's environment art/character art is outsourced. Every studio is doing this. Trust me on that one. I used to give speeches at my college to graduating classess about the industry. What do I tell them--

when all the jobs are literally gone? And that's not even addressing the Ai elephant in the room. It was bad before, imagine how shit it's going to become? Creative industries are at high risk now more than ever. I think we're going to be seeing a lot more AA sized or smaller efforts.

Allows for smaller countries to participate in a market. (Outsourcing to Malaysia, Vietnam, etc) Now most AAA releases in gaming are like 50% or more outsourcing. It irks me the wrong way when outsourcing increases and layoffs increase. We replace more local bodies with remote bodies.

It's hard to talk about because it can be viewed as anti-immigration or something. But I'd rather have people coming in on visas than our studios contracting with remote outsourcing studios. Anyways I was thinking about this again because the Starwars Galactic Racer articles leaving out nearly 100+

When I was fresh out of college, my classmates and I would be turned down only for the job listing to be filled by an visa employee. (legally public on h1b tracking sites) It also allows for people to immigrate to the US. Which was desirable (not as much now.. ha..)

listen, i found the solution to bsky being sold out to Ai lets make a discord server with 1 channel, 5 minute timelimit between posts that will be our social media feed, whos in?

@unreal dev people I did find some very cool perf "hacks" on unreal recently Only if you're using CSM shadows though (I'm optimizing for SteamDeck) So apparently there's a concept of "Far Shadow" which is a separate cascade reserved for vista objects, objects you have to mark as "Far Shadow"

I forgot to add but disabling distance field shadows completely on medium or lower for my SteamDeck profile has given me an average of 9 fps back in the outdoor zones When im done with this game I gotta do a write up on SteamDeck because it's been kinda fun discovering some of these things

This requires your Directional Light to be given it's own Far Shadow cascade count of at least 1. And how far you want that cascade to reach into (This distance starts AFTER your normal shadow distance) aside: I would not recommend using Distance Field shadows AT ALL on mobile hardware (SteamDeck)

Excuse me if some of y'all knew about this already but I somehow didn't (Applies to UE4 too) You can see here the interior of this dungeon on Medium doesn't get shadowed by the Directional light

Ai bros want a future where no one ever has a shared experience ever again. They want their perfect game. A game no one but them will play. A game they cant discuss with others. A game that never makes them uncomfortable, or kills off their favorite character.

Does Itch .io still do that thing where they dont pay you for a long time? I remember a few years ago they were doing that and It felt sketchy I want to release GearGrit DRM free on Itch when it comes out, and that would be my only reservation.

These next few months represents my final push to go independent. After nearly 4 years of development outside a day job, GearGrit is near completion. I consider myself extremely fortunate to be employed and be able to work on a game. But my ultimate goal is to build a sustainable "studio" 1/3

I want to help create a sustainable game development future for myself, but also my talented friends too. And I hope this game will be the catalyst for that. If it bombs, I'll just go back to what I've been doing. But if it works... It will have made all my time & money invested worth it. 2/3

This was not a solo effort, my wife, @pumbis.bsky.social and I built this game along with the help of a handful of talented folks ive met throughout the years. I'm very excited to show off the full game very soon. It's hard to stay excited about stuff in today's gloom. But this is what I have 3/3

i removed my @obsidian in my bio on other site because i kept getting a response kind of like this "Really, this is your opinion? Doesn't surprise me you working at that company!" Thinking it some dumb gotcha, like they got me So i just removed it. I still work there.

Also I know I shouldn't be on there, but if im being real its a business decision. When you are trying to sell a game, you should be everywhere you can to get eyeballs on it. That includes hitler site, thats my horrible take. Im sorry for it. I need to get on instagram too if im being honest.

not sponsored btw, but these mini pcs seem to be a pretty good bargin? Literally half the cost of a Steam Machine (1049 vs 500) Yeah its weaker but if all you want is to play Indie + last gen, it's incredible I installed Bazzite on it immediately lmao
